i know, we should probably have checked this much earlier.
but then, there's a certain trust that a engine-builder at least get's the basics correct. or so you would think ... tadaaaa, drum-roll please .... ........... ...... the angle drive (for the lack of a better word) that the distributor-shaft slides into was installed 180 deg. off !!! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ar15.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/fighting19.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif) Milt, if you read this, please go out and shoot your engine-builder ... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/screwy.gif) i'm driving a loaner 914 right now, bone stock '70 1.7L because we left my car at the shop to cool overnight to adjust the valves tomorrow and figure out why one bank of the carbs don't do snot on idle. i can unplug the wires and it doesn't effect idle, but as soon as i come off idle it runs on all four and pulls *very* strong. man, it runs sooooooooooo much better now. it's quieter too. and much smoother. just have to fix the idle thing. anyways, i totally forgot how quiet a stock 914 is, i almost fell asleep on the way home. i'm going to get some rum & coke now and i'll have that in conjunction with a good cuban cigar. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beer3.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beerchug.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/drunk.gif) Andy PS: we ditched the 050 and put in a dizzy from a 1.8L (a 009 i believe), set timing to 30 deg. and got a very nice power curve all the way up to 7k rpm ... |

EXCELLENT news!
Enjoy your cigar. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) Sounds like you may have some plugged idle jets... or one bank way out of sync with the other, or linkage adjustment issues... whatever, that's just small stuff. That is so good (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/clap.gif)
About the carbs...As this just happened to me. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif) There is something blocking the idle circuit. The actual cast tubes on the carb body. Shoot cleaner though the passage both directions 'til it flows right. You are so close. 7K RPM (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/unsure.gif) that's manly... KT |

Guess so... but you'll get to it. You're on easy street now.(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif) An MSD or Mallory CD box would be a nice addition. Would the fact that this engine builder thought the motor was intended for a rear engine application have anything to do with the dizzy "thing" being 180 off?

Hey Andy, glad you made it home ok. I saw you pull over, nothing bad I guess. Now you know what it feels like driving around my 1.7L everyday.

i sure hope not! the engine doesn't care which way it is mounted! it always turns the same way ... we were puzzled by the fact that is was running at all. we didn't notice until we dropped in the new dizzy. brought #1 up to TDC and dropped in the replacement dizzy and then WTF ???? the rotor was pointing towards my pass. taillight. huh ??? so we look down the hole and low & behold, it's 180 deg. off ... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif) i *really* hope i didn't damage anything running it that way for at least a 1000 miles. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/icon8.gif) (think burning holes in pistons) .... what a nightmare ... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sad.gif) Andy |

yeah, got the dual valve springs and solid rocker spacers ... my tach only goes up to 7k but i feels like it still got lots of power up there. i've tried, but i couldn't get the valves to "float" ... me likes ... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) Andy |

I would be more concerned with the rod bolts at 7k than the valves floating. |

Me thinks the engine builder spaced out and thought he was building a bug engine, thats why the gear drive was 180 off.

7000rpm?
I bet your (no, scratch that, let me say I know) tach is nowhere near accurate at that RPM....The stock VDO is junk. I always put an Autometer tach on any performance engine I build. Cheap insurance. My engine is worth more than CW correctness. The dizzy drive is a common rookie mistake. |
