Howdy folks,
Just a firm confirmation, I'm catching a free military hop to England (I knew being Active duty had advantages) on the 18th of March. Going to go visit my buddy I haven't seen since our year-long drunken blur in Korea from Sept 00 to Sept 01. I'll be there for 7 days. Granted, the main purpose is to go and basially party our asses off, piss his wife off to no extent, corrupt my buddy, and probably make his wife hate me and not trust me more than she already does (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) (I think my influence in Korea almost got him divorced--LOL) Nevertheless, I'll have a bunch of free time, a BMW to use at my leisure, and a whole shitload of cash (Just got my taxes back). So....... any suggestions on cool stuff to do? Car stuff or otherwise? We'll be at Mildenhall AFB, which I guess is about an hour from London. He's new there too, so any advice you can provide would be helpful. Cool sights? Night clubs? Museums? Whatever... I'm all ears!! Thanx!!! |

I was in England from '78 - '80. Stationed at Alconbury. Gone now due to base closures. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sad.gif) Flew out of and into Mildenhall a few times. As far as London goes, lot's of cool things to see. Not too sure about what's still there as far as night life. I'm pretty sure disco is out. I actually enjoyed getting out of the bigger cities and hitting the pubs in the smaller towns. Suck down some John Courage and play darts.

Comedy club is usually a riot, watch out for watered down drinks. The Ministry nightclub http://www.ministryofsound.com/home/ (superb, if you can get in!) http://www.tigertiger.co.uk/ cool laid back club, dancing & cocktails. http://www.a-london-guide.co.uk/ http://www.uktravel.com/ Brands Hatch for some racing http://www.motorsportvision.co.uk/brands-hatch/ or Silverstone isn't to far west http://www.silverstone-circuit.co.uk/ Touristy: Vic & Albert Meusem National history museum HMS Belfast Tower of London Also try touring the countryside & stop in any of the smaller village pubs, great local brews. Search for local freehouses http://www.ukfreehouses.net/ Have fun (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beer.gif) |

Food is bland. Eat ethnic, and you'll eat something that has taste to it!

National Heritage Motor Trust is a must.
Beaulieu Motor Musem Also the National Motorcycle Museum is reopening after a large fire a few years back. Motorcycle Museum Goodwood Fesitval of Speed and Goodwood Revival are also high on the list. Plenty of rallies, auto-x, trials, hillclimbs, and other events to keep you very happy. In London there are some good history museums and military museums. I really enjoyed the Tower of London. A bit touristy but very well rounded. Lots of old armor, cannons, guns, etc. Enjoy, |

If you like history, take a day and drive to York. Used to be the capital of Northern England "back in the day".
They have ruins built by the Romans. Pretty freaking old. |

Ok..... most of you here remember all my drama... cause I love to spread my personal issues all over the net--LOL So you know I'm a bit of a poon-hound... and I have every intention of exploring the local female population (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif) Ok.... so in Austrailia... the women LOVE American men. In Korea, they'd just assume run us over with a car unless we're spending $$$ What's England like? Do they shave their legs there?? LOL (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/screwy.gif) |

Don't know what it's like now but I remember that on the weekends, 3 or 4 busses packed with ladies would come to the base at about 9:00 p.m. About 2:00 a.m. they would leave but only half full. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

Auto-related: the Morgan Motor Company factory. One of the last independent small-volume car manufacturers. They're in Malvern Link, just outside Worcester (pronounced "Wooster" or "Wuster"), which is just SE of Birmingham.
btw, "about an hour from London" describes about half the country. London is VERY big, and England is quite small. Driving from one end of London to the other can easily take an hour. |

Do some research on going to "The Church" on Sunday - no it's not what you think - it's run by guys from New Zealand. This place rocks - you drink with the best of them and have a blast. There is another club down the street run by other New Zealanders - I just remember the spot's name, regardless - you want to go to church on any given Sunday in England - get me a t-shirt if you go - I'll send you the money.
cheers (as the brits say) |
