thanks for the advice, the AA website has VIN door decals, they list the 70-71 as a silver one, and the later years as black. My 72 year model has a silver decal, not black (build date 10-71)
Can some one confirm that a late 71 build date, 72 year model car is supposed to have a silver decal? Any idea when the factory switched color of the decal, it appears it was not at the 71/72 year model break as the AA catalog suggests. |

You'd have to find a severely anal person to know this answer. One will be along shortly. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)
I would imagine that it happend within a couple months of the change, not being a mechanical part, they just used the stock, until they ran out. M |

Yeah that is likely the case, but then again AA could be incorrect, so all you 72 owners, check your decal color, and report it back here, include the build date (month/year) that is on the decal, car VIN number is optional, I'd like to try to nail down a close date when the change occured.
I will go with the silver, as that is what my car has originally (well i am assuming it is original, with the numbers cut in the decal, and no indication any prior owner tried any fancy restoration or anything.) |

It depends on the color of the car not the year.I have had all years of 914s and different colors and each car had different decals,if it was black the decal would be silver ,if the car was white it would be either silver or black, never have I seen a black decal on a black car regardless of the year.

Here is the original decal from my car. 1974 Model year.
(IMG:http://www.hifidesign.com/studio_ftp/hifi_uploads/914doorvin.jpg) These are available new via Porsche with a copy of your registration & title. I just ordered mine and in 6 weeks I'll let you know what it looks like. Someone said the new decals say Porsche and not Volkswagenwerk so that may be a plus or minus depending upon how you view it. |

I am pretty sure thaats correct too, as I know of no contradictions. I have two 1974 914s. My august 1973 build date white car has a black label. My March 1974 build date black car has a silver label. I have seen a variety of labels too depending on year and smog equip reqs. Attached image(s) |

That is very interesting, my car is red with silver decal, as was my last red car (but it was a 70 model, built Nov. 69) Rest in peace my first 914.
How could AA be so wrong, don't they have hundereds or 914's to check this against? In fact I think all my cars (1970 and couple 72's) have had silver decals, and all have been originally red or orange. |

There was another thread about this earlier this year HERE
It looks like there is 5 or 6 different stickers. Black & white/silver w/out GVW, Black and white/silver with GVW, a couple others that were mentioned and the 6 type. |

More data for you, mine is a 72', 12-71 build date on a black sticker. It has white lettering and no GVW indicated. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/cool_shades.gif)
