Bought some 914rubber seat covers by way of stevegm. Super nice product but...there is still more to do before they can go on. The seats are very rough cores so I hope to replace as much foam as possible.
I am going to the upholstery shop tomorrow to see what they can source for new foam, wire and metal brackets. I will also trace out new pressboard and cardboard. I ordered some seat heaters off eBay. I will also pick up matching bolters from 914rubber. Disassembly is always the easy part. Attached image(s) |

You'll love those Bun Warmers. Especially in your area. Why are you using Rubber Seat Covers. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif)

Try Autos International in Vista CA &/or World Upholstery in Ventura CA area - I think one or both have the formed foam kits for the stock 914 seats when they do interior restos.
Cheers! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) Tom /////// |

I have committed to building up the seats from scratch. New foam is on the way. I will pick up the pressboard from HD and I figured out how to replace the rusted metal tabs that crimp over the metal wire. Starting on the seat bottoms first since they look easier and then to the seat back. Stay tuned. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smash.gif)

I've been toying with the idea of new foam kits. It will take some time, but I really think that they are needed. Same with the back pads. Won't do you a lot of good right now, but will be a future item.

I have most of it figured out. I even found some black cardboard with the same grain pattern as oem. I still have to figure out the side bolsters but I have some ideas. Materials are on order so some progress this weekend and then hope to finish up next weekend. hopefully...

Staying tuned into this thread. I've been noticing a sore vertebrae in my back after driving the teener for a long period...think the foam in the backrest is getting weak and my spine is pressing up against the fiberglass seat frame.

My seats were in pretty bad shape. I ended up going to an upholstery supply store in town and picked up some foam to try to repair them as best I could. To form the foam around the frame I used a piece of copper wire (12/2 romex) and bent it around the edge of the frame. I put the ends of the wire onto a solder gun, using the heat to cut through and form the inside of the foam. Once attached to the frame I shaped the foam as best I could. I'm not great at this picture posting thing but here goes...

Post lots of pics Mark! Bob - I will. I started taking apart your old seat and it looks like some seats had the carpet pad while some had felt. I will post soon. The good news is that it would be easy to modify and restore the back pad of the seat without tearing apart the entire seat and starting fresh. I am buying plenty of high density foam so I'll have extra for you to play with. |
