on my 73.when i turn key i hear fuel pump, when i turn to engage starter, sometimes it will engae, other times starter will just click or turn a few turns and other times it fully engages and starts car.new starter one week old,i replaced starter because i had problem with previous starter and it did the same thing.

ive thought maybe a bad starter switch but it does engage fuel pump every time.ive tried different batteries ,still the same symptoms

car runs great and always will start eventually.

any ideas.?

The starter contacts in the switch may be bad. Very common. New switches are crap. Install a starter relay to take the electrical load off the switch to preserve it longer.
