I have a smell of fuel when I lift the hood or in the car interior when it sits for a while.
I have checked under the splash guard where the fuel lines come out, all dry. Last summer I replaced the tank gasket under the filler neck. Could it be my gas cap or a hole in the tank near the top?
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Evaporative recovery system not hooked up/ hooked up correctly (charcoal canister)?

Fuel lines underneath the tank (rubber hoses)?

Bad gasket on the filler cap or filler cap not fitting tight?

I just pulled my tank because of the same problem with a gas smell.

The PO had replaced the fuel lines with braided lines and it appears they just decided to "pinch" the FI return line. I think mine is leaking from either the pinched FI return line or from the connectors to the tank. Or both (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wacko.gif)

is there suppose to be a gasket in here?

and yes, there's supposed to be a gasket in there ...

also, check for fuel leaks inside the center tunnel!

Thanks Andy,

I'm almost positive the leak is coming from the lack of a gasket and the pinched FI return. There is a new solid braided line from the front to the back, so, i doubt it was in the tunnel. i'll check to make sure, but, that line is brand new with AN fittings.

When i took out the gas tank i could see it had leaked onto the metal and was causing some corrosion.

i did the complete POR15 clean, prep and paint on the area under the tank.

i'm taking the tank to a shop to get it cleaned out on Monday and will make sure the gaskets are installed.

Gotta get it done for WCC.

Picture below of the after POR 15
