I need some transmission advice for my 74 2.0. When cold the car shifts nicely, i.e. goes into gear just fine. As it heats up it starts to grind going into first at a stop and I notice it's a little tougher to get into other gears. With a little pressure it always goes.
I thought it was syncros in 1st and 2nd because if I double clutch while moving it goes in nicely. But then I discovered it goes in nicely without the dbl just by moving forward. If this was a more modern car I'd suspect clutch slave or master cylinder, at least that's what it feels like - like the when hot the clutch isn't fully disengaging. I've adjusted the cable because when I got the car it had almost no free play (so I added some). Thoughts? |

Try tightening the cable just a little more. Heat makes everything expand a little including your cable.
Also check cable and make sure it looks good. Might be ready to break. Believe me, they break at the worst times. I carry a spare in my rear trunk. |

Also a trick is to place into second before going to first. Helps prevent grinding. |

I just posted about this the other day:
... you might want to order some spare cone screws for your mobile go-bag. You're stranded if you lose one in the field (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) Another goodie that should be in everybody's go-bag is one of those little clutch cable clevis thingies and a couple 11mm nuts ... already attached to a spare clutch cable (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) |

... and the gabelkorpf, clevis pin, and rubber boot. Pretty much everything listed in the diagram - and since the pieces I took off are still OK (except cable) I'm ready for a cable catastrophe!
