I noticed this on a car in the classifieds. It's a 74 with a/c. My 73 has the gauges all in a line down the center. Was this offset arrangement a factory change in 74 or was it done just because of the a/c? Just curious.

Yep, the a/c console gauges were criss-cross because they didn't have the room. Non-a/c were in a straight line.

The other center console with A/C had gauges in a line down the center, but angled the gauges so they faced the driver.

To be clear there were two A/C systems used on 914s. When one type was installed there was a nifty new gauge panel that angled the gauges toward the driver. When the other was installed this zig-zag install was used.

"Two"? I know of at least 3. VPC, DPD, and Cool Aire, and there may7 be more. The Cap'n

Sorry, I should have said that Dave and Unclerichy were describing two of the more popular systems available. To simply read the posts in order in may not have been clear to the original poster that they were speaking about two different center console configurations based on the two more popular A/C installs.

I've never seen pics of the Coole Aire system or heard mention of it... the 914s I have owned all had the VPC or DPD units installed. Thanks for setting me straight.

I don't have A/C and don't plan on adding it so the details didn't matter to me. I just was curious so that if I did something I'd know if I'd varied from stock or not.

I also started this because I figured it would give us something to talk about besides the latest on the gestapo tactics of our "justice" system.

Saw a console for sale on EBay that has 4 guages and they are zig-zag to fit them in.

I suspect that is a VPC air conditioning console, which had staggered gages, with the lowest (4th ) gage added by a PO. If you have the Authenticity book, look on page 65, and visualize the added 4th. I have a very unlolested 74 with DPD air. It has the tilted gages.
