I have a strange sound I can't identify coming from #1 cylinder. It sounds like a exhaust leak coming off of the head at times, but not all the time. But, I can't feel a leak or stop the sound. Yes, I annealed the copper ring too.
The sound kinda comes and goes. If I get on the throttle hard I hear it, but after a bit it seems to change and sometimes go away. It seems to change with the temp changes.
I've done a compression test warm and cold and all is normal.
I guess I'm wondering if a compression leak from between the cylinder and head can come and go? (I did not use the head gaskets. I lapped the cylinders to the heads...)
Or, could it be something more like piston slap?
Any other input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon

Turn the crank until both ex & in valves for #1 are closed. Pressurize the cylinder with some air thru the spark plug hole and have someone listen thru the tail pipe then the carb or throttle body serving that cylinder. You'll hear it on one or the other if it is a valve seal problem.
