Redline is 8600 RPM.... It has a second cam that kicks in around 6,600 RPM.. but I have to keep it under 6000 RPM until about 1000 miles... except for a couple of spirited runs....

It's a kick in the pants right now, just reving up to 6000 RPM...

Other have said that when you get to dig into that second cam, it's like a turbo kicking in... grin factor is proportionate to higher RPMs...

I ran my 914/6 2.7 against an Elise at Pacific Raceways last summer ...

I thought we would be pretty close since my teener has close to 200hp and weighs less than 2100 lbs.

Boy was I wrong! The Elise gapped the 914 every lap!

In the paddock I went over and noticed some extra equipment on the Elise ... a supercharger!

I didn't feel so bad after I spied the blower ...

Eddie

Karl,

Thank you for sharing what you find is a modern 914-4. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

I am impressed how light the car is and how clever Lotus has manufactured the car. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif)

How are the composite panels fit and finish? Are they f/g and wood? Do they detach?

I like the original concept versions, I think they went a bit overboard on the crescent shapes...

The looks of the Elise are definitely different. It takes an enthusiast to appreciate it... much like the ugly duckling Porsche... the 914.

My initial assesment of the built quality is very positive. Panel fit and finish are really nice. Alignment is right up there. Paint quality is surprisingly nice. I spent 2-3 hours waxing the car yesterday so I was up close and personal with many parts of the car.

The car has the sport suspension (very stiff) and the touring pack (added sound insulation, leather seats, better stereo (not really) and a cargo net... ooooh!

I was expecting the sports suspension to be slightly intolerable on the road over bumps... but surprisingly it is very pleasant.

I have two rattles on the car (the windows in the door frame).

And one of the swaybar bushings is squeaky on hard turns.

The car also has dealer installed Xenon headlights which are really nice. The stock headlights, from what I am told... uhh... suck!

And finally.. the car as the Stage II exhaust. Bascially the muffler is 11 lbs vs. 23 and a bit louder.... Very throaty at higher RPMs (almost a little too fart-canish). And when decelerating from high RPMs has a nice burble and pop to it....

I took the wifey out for a midnight ride last night through the back roads... she really liked it... (She said it was very low to the ground compared to her Hummer)... Today's comment... very tiny.

I've heard people say that sports suspension on the ELise (and 23mm torsion bars on the 914) are unbearably stiff on the street. I have to say the 914 is really nice with the stiff suspension.

It took me a long time to talk Rich @ HPH around to setting me up with really stiff stuff.

In my car with 175lb rears and 23mm front bars (and with mueller's bearings) I thought that Sears point raceway (here in cal) is smooth, which I found out later is not at all the case. That's got to be good.

Glad you like the car man. If I could justify it to myself I'd buy one today. I'm really interested in how you feel about the two when you have the 914 done.

Fiid... glad to hear about YOUR suspension setup. Those are the same parts I have for the 914... Mueller bearings, 23mm front bar, 175 rear springs...

What shocks are you running?

Oh yes. Shocks... GRRR.

Well - I was running Koni Yellows all around (and liked them a lot). But they fronts are 914 shocks and I changed to 5-lug - so now I have a Bilstein front end. I think I need a set of Boge front strut casings and adapters (I need 3.5" caliper spacing too) to get back to my Koni setup.

Fiid, That's what I have for my adj Konis. There was an adapter I bought from Automotion many years ago and when Brad worked on my car he had to modify or shim something on it.

Karl, I wouldn't call the 914 ugly duckling (although I am "enhancing" the design on Neo914). (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif) I think the Elise styling is appropriately distinct and is much more daring than Lotus' bland 90's Elan. I owned and liked the styling of a TC Europa which many think were "ugly".

Have fun with it and share more...

I love the looks of the Elise. I used to think they looked better than 914s until i saw that picture. A gt flared 914 looks so much better. Now only if I could have one in new condition with 200hp.

Damn it, I have to stop dreaming about nicer cars. It's depressing me.

wow Karl, the Elise looks ... well, just (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/drooley.gif)
congrats!

have to agree with the others... since the 914 has to be repainted anyway, do it in the same color as the Elise. Would be very cool IMO

BTW, Discovery had a very cool 3 hour documentary on the Elise, very indepth and detailed how the whole car sprung to life (all the different design / manufactering stages). You should try to get a copy somewhere...
