I ordered a set of black plates for one of my (1960's era) cars last month - just curious if anybody has recently ordered some, and how long it took to take delivery?
This isn't what I ordered, it's just an example |

I may still order my personalized plates in the blk/yel as they still never authorized the blue/yellow.

Very curious whether you can get all numbers (no letters) on the plate.

I just got a set about a week ago, took about 4-5 weeks to show up. Mine are not personalized, just the standard numbers and letters on black plates.

I patiently waited a long 12.5 weeks, but I'm happy with the results.

If we already have a personalized plate can it be done in the new black? Is it the same price? I already pay a premium every year to have the vanity plate.

I had the same question as to how long the black plates take for delivery. I was told by the DMV that since the plates are made in prison it all depends on conditions at the prison. If there are any problems, disturbances or situations at the prison it will delay the plates being ordered. Also the request for the black plates is considerable, increasing the wait time.

I can't imagine there would be any problems at the prison(s) where these plates are made.....these people always got along well in society, right? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/slap.gif)

I might be weird, but I don't like the black plates on late cars. Guess I'm a originality nut ball type. My 74 still sports its original blue plates ! Too bad they did not make the blue ones too.

I think if there's enough demand the DMV will start making new different color plates, at least that's what the DMV implied when I talked to them.

I've seen dozens of the new plates already, mostly with the random DMV sequence of letters/ numbers.
Funny though it looks like a presidential legacy plate, as all of the ones I see start out with the letters: B O (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) |

Reminds me of James Bond or the FBI. Personally I don't like the black plates on a Teener. Dunt look right. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/barf.gif) Oh well everyone's likes are different. |

Very curious whether you can get all numbers (no letters) on the plate. Yeah, me too, Gary, but I've seen pix of 'numbers only' plates on line: 1957, 1963 & 1966 (like the one shown in the first post).Crossing my fingers for you Mark! I know but i see those for sale at Pomona and Long Beach. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) All number plates in Cali are official vehicles only. i order "1970 914" from DMV; they said it was avaialable and waited 4 months; then got a letter saying "nope". That was 2011. The numbers only plates are white and have CA EXEMPT on them. I would suggest you check with DMV to see what the status and outcome is on your order....call Sacramento; don't go to local DMV...they don't have a clue... I really hope I'm wrong and it's changed... |

Agreed, the black plates don't look right on newer cars and the blue plates look more appropriate on 914s. Our '71 has blue plates, the '75 has white (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)
I'm attempting to get the black plates for the early 60's cars. I thought all the EXEMPT plates started off with an 'E' (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) Gary, did the DMV refund your $ ? |

No refund, I ended up ordering the current one with mixed characters. Take a look at all those police undercover Fords or any police car for that matter. Ambulance... all numbers with CA EXEMPT on them. |

If you're an Auto Club member, you can ask about all types of vanity + black plates while there in the AAA office. They do know their way around the DMV stuff. I get my annual tags there, usual visit is 10 minutes/no appointment/no attitude (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
