I remember that story when it came out, but I don't think I need to buy the article now.

I also remember the article. Car & Driver used to use Pintos as project cars.

The article makes me wonder, though. We can see an occasional 914 on the street today, maybe several in California, but do you ever see a Pinto? Or a Vega? (Some guy in my area drives a Maverick in fair condition.)

I guess cars survive when they appeal to enough people to save them. The relatively unloved 914 has taken a fair beating, but did anyone love the Pinto with its "road hugging weight"?

When I was 9 years old my dad had a SWEEEEEET red pinto with wood grain siding (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I remember my dad was always working on that car. One day the brakes failed comming in the drivway and my mom had to e-brake the car to a stop as it hit the garage door (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I thought that was the coolest thing at the time (IMG:style_emoticons/default/clap56.gif)

I am sure somewhere there is a pimped out pinto cruz'n the strip (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

Cheers

for a while I thought about getting a small collection of ugly ass cars... the vega, the pinto, the gremlin, the corvair... they would make cheap projects to start if you have a love of them... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif)

hell I still love the notchback VW... saw a sweet one in either hot vws or vw trends this month... that's definately an ugly car... but someone made it sweet!
4 coats of black paint, a coat of gold prismatic(flames) and 3 coats of clear coat helped... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Havent seen one in years than a few days ago I saw a yellow pinto (yellow pintos are faster) and it was in good shape, brang back a bunch of memories from when my buddy had one and we put a cherry bomb muffler on it and cruised around acting all cool ( realizing now that you can not be cool in a pinto ) but that was 25 years ago (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

re the vw t-3's. check out the vw sites like thesamba. t-3's are a very desireable car in some circles these days and fetch a steep premium. but of course, you know what the hot set up is, t-4 power.

A few years back a guy was racing them at the watkins glenn historic races. I was surprized, the thing did really well. The only thing stock on it was the body pretty much. Big ass tire in the rear, etc.
Just for grins and giggles my buddy and I asked him why a pinto? He said he use to have a 944, but this handles better. LOL

They're not ugly if you put some nice wheels on 'em and polish 'em up a little. This one looks nice (except the roof rack is a bit **y, IMO).

BTW, you can find a reprint of the Porsche VS. Pinto article in "Porsche 914 Ultimate Portfolio" that you can buy here http://www.brooklands-books.com/pages/porsche914.html . I have this book and it's very interesting.

the one in the mag this month is lowered and I think they shaved a bit off the top too... very tight look!

btw, I think in the race pic... the pinto is getting lapped! that's the only reasonable conclusion... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool_shades.gif)
