One lucky tattoo'd teener has his eyes on this set and wanted me to post a picture when they were done. This is a matched set of front (yes I do fronts) and rear calipers. Done in the very chic silver (clear zinc) with gold accents.

We just finished two pairs of original GT calipers for a client that's a lister here. Special thanks to Armando and DaveP for helping find the proper original parts to make these a reality.

GT rear calipers (for the most part) are 914-6 rears with 10mm spacers inserted to allow the 20mm vented rotors. We had to source new spacers and proper Ribe bolts for one of these pairs.

Be careful if you need those fancy gold pad springs. They're 911 rear M-caliper units that come in a "Porsche" box so the official tally was $45 clams per pair! I've always been one "not" to rip people off just because it says Porsche on their car but the folks at Porsche seem to be having a field day with it (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) (sorry Porsche but it's true... you can get the same spring kit for an A-Caliper for around $12.00 bucks, just not in the official box)

question for you: Think the /6 rear calipers have enough meat on them to have the bores opened up to accept the /4 front pistons?? Think the /4 front piston can be modified to be used with the stock /4 rear parking brake mechanicals?? I've taken apart a rear caliper to see how it all goes together..... The /6 rear caliper does use larger pistons correct?? |

On to the questions: A stock -4 rear piston is 35mm. A -6 rear piston is 38mm. So yes, they're bigger. Thay are the same size as the 911 rear piston of the same era. This is why they matched them up with standard 911 M-calipers up front. The calipers almost look identical side by side but the -6 is a little larger. I'm not certain but I believe the front 914 is 43mm (just finished the last core I have here and it's hard to get a measurement with the dust covers on.) Things that you would have to do: Enlarge the bore by 5mm (you've now lost the step to seal the dust cover to). Regroove the new bore for the piston seal. Remove the dampening mechanism from the -4 pistons. Machine a ring groove in the -4 piston. Machine a new spider to attach to the adjustment screw bore. Find a snap ring to fit on the new spider and fit into the groove. Find a way to attach the dust cover. Hire an attorney (because by this time your wife will know your nuts and will want out of the marriage at any cost.) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wacko.gif) Short answers: 1. There's not enought meat there. 2. I don't think the -4 piston can be modified. Auuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhh bottom line, it would be easier to match up the proper rear caliper that comes with whatever front caliper you'd be using than it would to machine a uber rare -6 caliper. The 914/4 fronts are 42mm, coincidently the same as the later 911 rears. I have not had a pair of these late 911 rears, so I cannot confirm how close in design the parts are to either the 914/4 front ( either version) or to the 38mm 911 rear. The 914/6 rear appears to use the same outer casting as the 911 rear (38mm), and is just modified for the adjuster. The inner castings are all different.
To answer your question directly, I don't know if a 914/6 rear can be modified to 42mm or not. I suspect it could be. I am working on that already but need a 911 42mm rear set to work with. |

educate me how can I get those springs for 12$ where I don't need no porsche box! I do however need a pair of thos "t" pr "x" pad springs for a set of A calipers and also for a set of S calipers..... not sure if the A and S calipers take the same spring, but they might! brant |

Eric.... are the caliper bodies zinc plated or painted to appear plated?
If they are plated? How do you protect the internals so the bores don't get plated as well? Just curious? |
