Okay guys...

I have installed glass flares last winter. I now have a set of dials on my '74 and have clearance issues with the front of the tire and TWO areas..

The first is the tire and the front edge of the flare.. I have very little clearence and it changes as the wheel turns (lock to lock)

The second is the tire hits the front inside wheel well at full turn????

I have the same problem on both sides and the flares look okay, alignment wise (until the wheels were installed)??

Any Ideas?

Will caster affect this?

Cheers
Kerry

I assume they are standard width GT type flares.

What whees are you running? Phone dials?

What are the dimensions of the wheel?

What tires are you running (profile and width)?

What is the offset of the wheel? Most likely it is an offset problem.

If you look at the backside of the wheel it will give the size... something like 7J 15 and then a number in a square... the number in the square is the offset.

Or post the wheel part number and we can figure it out.

I have 15x7 dials with the 23.? offset and a 1" spacer.

Tires are 225/60/15

I have been looking all over the PParts fourm and have had no luck.

I I spent today cutting the flares to allow the wheel to turn without hitting the flare but it still hits the inner wheel well???

225 X 60 X 15?.....humm, that's a 24.6 dia tire (if my math serves)......could be the problem (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Size Circumference Diameter
165/60/15 73.617 23.43 - stock
225/60/15 80.478 25.62 - yours
245/45/16 77.499 24.67 - fat 9" rears
225/50/15 74.915 23.85 - common 7" or 8" fronts

Stock tire profile had 23.43" diameter
Your tire profile has a 25.62" diameter

Common tires for front flares on 7" or 8" rims would be 225/50/15 about a .9" difference... not sure if that is making ALL the difference, but it might!

If your wheels are 7" you may consider 205 width tires.

And sometimes two different manufacturers of tires with the same tire size and profile can have vastly different physical dimensions. Maybe you have too much sidewall overlap and that's what's rubbing.

165-60 is stock? I thought stock was 165R15 which is more like a 75 series tire, no?

That SUCKS (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

I just bought 4 new tires 225/60/15 from some of the recomendations off the other fourms. These tires have ZERO miles on them!!

They measure about 25"+ from the driveway to top of tire.

Is there anything I can do about the wheel well? What normaly stops the steering travel? Can I neatly BFH the well? or Is that just stupid?

Arggggggggggggggggggggggggggg : (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pirate.gif)

The stock 165SR15 tire was super tall. Somewhere between 78 and 82 aspect ratio.

I have been running ~23" diameter tires for a while. Clearance is great but there is a gearing effect that not everybody will want.

The stock tire may have been taller than that... I am going from memory. Most of the literature just refers to it as a 165SR15 tire...

There may be more to it than the tires...

Perhaps some others will chime in on the rims you are using.

i thought when the aspect ratio was not stated, it was assumed that it was 82 % of the tire width. i currentlty have cooper 165 r 15's on my 2.0

I gots my calcumulator out this time....now I'm dangerous.

165(82%) X 15 should be 25.6 in dia.....but...it's only
6.5 inches wide. A 225 tire is 8.85 wide.....unless it's a Hoosier which is 9.25 at the tread....they cheat.

The 225 X45 Hoosier is 22.5 tall. No rubbing in front
with & inch Fuch. They are rubbing on the rear inner fender at full compression....goddamn progressive springs...-2 deg camber don't help that. Anybody got a pair of 7 mm spacers?
