Here's a few of our transaction cabinet. All Apple X-Serves. These are in a seperate area and locked down because of the nature of what they do. There are two more 525s in this cabinet for security.

Over 150 unix boxes and I dunno how many MS based clunkers. Probably more than 150 though. 2 seperate redundant data centers, several different STK and IBM libraries, etc...

All run Linux/BSD. We don't have a single Win box anywhere in our datacenters. The security holes, and constant licensing BS...no thanks. (Does anyone have a CLEAR understanding of the Terminal Services licensing???)

This is our primary DC, we have a secondary with another 80-90 old linux servers. All old HP stuff from a buy-out we did. We used these 35 Suns, to replace 250 HP (Compaq) Win2K servers. Moved half to our secondary sight, and sold the rest on eBay.

I'll show you all the pics you want. There is NO WAY anyone is getting through our firewalls....especially by looking at pictures.

I'll post pics of the battery room next time I'm up there...300 wet-cell batteries. Can light the place at full-load for 4 days without doing to Diesel! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

Funny, I can plan a multi-million dollar datacenter, build it, load it, and config every machine there...yet I'm scared to drop the engine on my 914 by myself. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif)

So what is running on all those Suns? Are the Suns more cost effect than Dells or other PC servers for running Linux?

From a sheer size perspective the most impressive compute room I've
ever seen was out at Novell back in the early 90's.

They created a test lab that would run something like 20,000+ PCs all
running Novell. It was pretty primative. Each PC had a full monitor
and a keyboard.
They were all loaded onto Bakers racks with wheels and then all put into
a BIG room. The surface area of the room was supposedly bigger than
the AstroDome palying field. It was MASSIVE. You could look out a
window in their viewing room and barely see the other end of the room.
It consumed so much power that they had the power company
drop in their own private 50kv transformer substation just to run it.
For power back up they used these jet engines that were loaded
with TNT to kick start them if the power ever should go down.

I've never been a PC/Windows/Novell fan but this lab was so big
it was actually amazing.

Just so you can see how the other half lives... This is my server room. Lots of dual P2 processor servers from about 1996, several donated. Since I get to manage the network and do everything else computer related, including the web pages, there never seems to be enough time to even clean up the piles. I'm the Senior Engineer (of 3) in charge of the management of approximately 250 servers in 4 states. They are various hardware and OS flavors. Almost all Windows though. The newest toy is the IBM Blade Center with 7 Dual Xeon blades that I've set up to boot off of our 3TB EMC Clarion SAN. The Blade Center has multiple Fiber paths to multiple fiber switches in the fabric the SAN is on.

I've also got a Quad Processor IBM X440 with 16GB of RAM. It is running VMWare GSX Server and hosting about a dozen virtual servers.

We are currently installing an IBM Robotic Tape Library with 4 drives and room for 75 tapes. (Took shipment yesterday!)

I've got a 15 server Citrix Farm running published apps and published desktops. I built a 120 server Citrix farm while I was contracting. That was fun.

I'll get you guys some pics of the server room. I think you'll like it. Nice Racks of WIndows Servers, Raised flooring. Multiple Air Handlers, IBM Mainframe, EMC Symetrix Storage, EMC SAN, Racks of Cisco Core Switches and Routers, It's definitely geek porn!

You are a braver man than I. Even our MS rep (at the time) couldn't explain it. It was a joke. This was 2 years ago...I've been told it is a lot better now.

Glad we don't have to deal with that BS any more.

I was on the team internally at Ms that taught others how it worked. I know all of it's pitfalls too. If you ever want an explanation, I can take the time.

But I would rather not... I am still a bit pissed at MS. But I still earn my living off their products.

Wow, thats a lot more computers then I have thrown away since 1984. What the hell do you do with all that sh*t? I am serious. What is all that stuff for?
By the way I just bought some down load crap that was suppose to be registry repair and it wiped out all" my document stuff."and gave wiped out my config system on xp pro. Wife is really p*ssed at me for that one.
