AAA lithium batteries last 6-12 months. Very small so easy to hide. Uses the GlobalStar network used by commercial trucking, etc. Someone mentioned Tile. I have a bunch of those for keys and such. They rely on bluetooth and have a VERY limited range. They are very handy but I would not consider them a suitable tracking device for a vehicle. |

I'm working on an insurance policy upgrade and probably will add security cameras to the system here shortly too. These days I think the parts prices and certainly early 911 prices are attracting thieves to cars they normally would pass over for the Camrys and Accords. Just look at what they can sell a good 3.2 or 3.6 911 engine for as an example. And they're easily containerized and sent anywhere globally.

Do you really believe the Feds? If I recall, they let lots of criminals go due to budget concerns. Also don't let the main stream media lead one like a cow around. Do the turbo tie rods require the washers that come in the "kit" or not? Actually no, unless someone bends you over. |

Oh SirAndy, you could not be more misinformed. The stats for at least the last 20 yrs are a load of crap. In city's and their respective police departments, there is significant pressure placed on the officers, detectives, hell even the police chiefs, to under report part 1 crimes. I'm very familiar with the two largest departments in Ca, and what they report to the Feds could be put to better use as toilet paper. With the propositions that released inmates, together with the increase in Meth use, crime is at an all time high...
When the stats of a particular crime get high enough that it might be of concern to the public, the Feds just reclassify it..I was part of the merry go round for 34 yrs. Sorry, you can delete it.. |

I have a bad feeling that parts from this car will end up on eBay. If he posts a serial number of his engine, I'll keep an eye out on the interwebs. Dunno what you going to sell off it,motor no,gearbox no,body no,,all serial numbered parts and I'am sure the owner has all those details, can't see this car ever being sold complete somehow, wonder if they got the licence plate from the truck in the photo's?. |

People dont buy 3.2's for the serial numbers. If the 3.2 engine in my 914 was a stolen engine, nobody would know. I don't know what the serial number is and have no reason to look. We buy 3.2's & 3.6's all the time. There isn't a reason to research an engines serial number. It's just a 30 year old engine. |

I hate to say it but Blue6 is right. I too have been in that world for a very long time and departments are very aware of the impact their reported number to the Feds have on property values, both residential and commercial. So they play with the statistics and reclassify crimes to fall outside of the serious crime categories they actually are.
I remember back over 35 years ago when this first came to my attention and a local small bedroom community in the Bay Area that was experiencing a serious rash of auto burglaries, due to their proximity to an urban ghetto city, just reclassified them as petty thefts so they would not be subject to reporting. That was just the tip of the iceberg. When they realized that worked they started doing that with everything. Money talks in all worlds. Think about the current unemployment rate in the USA. If you believe those numbers are accurate..... |

Alarms do no good here in CA. Nuisance and nothing more. Rest assured I will take measures to be sure (absent teleportation) that my Six stays put when it returns home.
I will also makes sure before it leaves VA it is adequately insured in the event of aforementioned teleportation, etc. |

There are various commercial locating/GPS services available. Stealing is a horrible thing, but failure to take the initiative to protect your "stuff" is a close second. One of the silliest posting I've seen this year. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) |

How many of us have actually researched the history and tried to determine if something was stolen before buying it on ebay or at a swap meet? Hmm. Didn't think so. Best bet is a locked and alarmed garage, cameras, dog, and good insurance. |

Stealing is a horrible thing, but failure to take the initiative to protect your "stuff" is a close second. So you say the owner of this car is roughly the moral equivalent of the person that stole this car because the owner didn't install the proper alarm? It has nothing to do with the type of alarm...It has everything to do with due diligence. In today's world if you have anything of value i.e. Car, Diamonds, Art, Ect.....you have a obligation to protect it from those who want to take it from you. No personal Morality brought in to question. Just the facts of the society we live in. |

Sad to hear this....too much like the movie Gone in 60 Seconds.
If your car isn't on a lift or jack stands then the best protection is prevention I think. Kill switch, fuel lock, alarm. Your working against the clock. If they get the car running and out the clock starts ticking. Five minutes later they drive it into a container and your GPS and other electro device fall on their face. And you're still home sleeping or at your buddy's drinking beer. |
