Saw this on the bulletin board at the grocery store a while ago and couldn't ever get a hold of the guy. He put up another ad and I got in touch finaly. We had one when I was a kid and I always wanted to get one.
It will be my Coffee Shop company vehicle. (IMG:http://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/198943.jpg) (IMG:http://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/198944.jpg) (IMG:http://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/198945.jpg) (IMG:http://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/198947.jpg) Engine runs ok but I am going to pull it and clean it up, new gaskets and hoses and such. It's nice that it is a D-jet. Sure is easy to get at this thing compared the 914. (IMG:http://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/198950.jpg) |

Don't you have to do something goofy with the engine mount? I have a '69 Square myself. Great daily car. First car I've had that had working D-Jet. |

You just have to fab a mount to support the engine and tranny...
I am working on one to sell that will be universal, more and more TIIIs are getting TIV power. |

My first car was a Fastback. I'm still looking for a nice '69 to have as a daily driver.
Check this shorty I saw on a street near MikeDs in LA: Attached image(s) |

The wife's daily driver is a '71 squareback...great for hauling the kiddies around.
Thinking about putting my old 914 1.8 L-jet in it next winter. |

Jake beat me to it. Type IV power for the Type III is a good thing. Bus heat exchangers, etc...

that's a clean one (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif) . great cars i had a 72' i drove the wheels off. nice delete on the side chrome trim strips. pull the backseat bottom and kill any rust that might be hiding around the battery area, then go to costco and buy an optima.

I have my 1.7 with D-jet that I pulled out of the 914. I think next winters project may be to freshen up the 1.7 and drop it in the Square. Jake, keep us posted on that engine mount bar. I also read something regarding having to do something to the manifolds? Kevin - Already in the process of pulling up the stuff on the floor under the back seat, so far so good on rust in there. Eric - Make me an offer I can't refuse (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) |

a couple of years ago there was a huge spike in values for clean t-3s. i don't know if things are still the same. t-4 are all well and good, but there's nothing wrong with a good running 1.6 w/d-jet. if you start messing with the bosses "new" car and it winds up on jackstands, you'll be in the dog house.

might as well slap 4 fuch wheels on when your reskinning. that way you can ask, "what size a tire can i put on a t-3 with....", and post a wtb in the classifieds. i know that house sale equity is burning a hole in your pocket.

A little help: http://www.icbm.org/erkson/ttt/engine/type...e_4_conversion/
There's really not much to hanging the engine in a late model but it's not necessarily a "drop in". Carbs, at least for a BIG engine, will be somewhat restricted because you'll need to have short filters in order to keep the engine under the deck lid. The stock 1.6L with FI (fuel injection) is quite reliable and easy. A Bentley shop manual would be a WISE tool to have. I highly recommend you subscribe to the www.vwtype3.org email list (it's free). Here's my latest acquisition: http://www.icbm.org/erkson/personal/vw_auto_72/ and here's my baby: http://www.icbm.org/erkson/personal/VWSTATS.HTM Welcome (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beerchug.gif) |

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/agree.gif) I have a squareback with a busted engine, and Im going to have some time soon along with a "company car" budget. You're in good company here. Now if you get a swb 912 you can joint the "lapuwali and mattr club" of 914 owners with a 912 and squareback (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/lol2.gif) |

Not sure I understand the big attraction to putting a T4 into one of these. The T1-based engine is dirt cheap to rebuild, easy to get parts for, and for daily use 65hp with 26-28mpg is plenty adequate. It will cruise at 70mph all day long, which is about all I'd rate the chassis and brakes for. Mine never feels underpowered except when climbing a steep grade. Now, a hot engine in a 914 or 912, I can understand. Gotta have the beans to back up the looks and the handling.

there's light blue 72' fb down the street from my house. i drive by just to see how much more it has deteriorated. when we bought our house 7 years ago it was in the guy's driveway, nice and shiney. now it sits behind his house fading away. i've given up stoping to ask if he's ready to sell. he said it needed a brake caliper, 7 years ago, and he wanted to fix that first. now it's just a pos. too bad.
