I got the PS2 game console last night. Pretty fun. It came with GT3. The Porsche cars in the game are called "RUF's".
I guess licensing issues? I would like to hear which driving games you like and would recommend. Thanks, KT |

Gran Turismo 4! Get a force feedback wheel for it.

NFS underground and HP2 are good... but for realism, it's gran turismo series(still partial to "2") or nothing at all
RUF is an aftermarket company for PORSCHE... like callaway for corvette, or rousch for mustang... cosmetic differences and some slight engine mod differences... porsche and ferrarri will not liscence the GT games for some reason... not realistic enough maybe?! |

Will playing the games help learn the real tracks?

GT4 tracks are pretty much exact copies. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

In GT4 you can run at Infinion and Laguna Seca. You definitely learn the turns and the lines but I imagine that the benefits when you actually get on the track in a DE situation are marginal.

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/idea.gif) Handy for learning the turns and lines though... Anticipation helps a lot when you're out there... |

I've head that with a force feedback wheel a car in the game is very close in lap times to the car in real life (like a couple tenths maybe). I think Sam Miati (sp) from Road&Track did a test on it. Cool stuff. I might have to get a PS2 for just this game...set up a spare 914 seat in my basement and get the wheel.

the local Fry's store has GT4 running on a 52" HD projection TV with racing chairs that are basically honda race seats, with the new logitech feedback wheel and pedals on a sweet setup... it's engineered correctly, and feels just like a car(you even release and slide the seats around like a real car... it's an awesome setup... definitely the way the game was meant to be played....
I know we're talking PS2, but I really dig the driving series games on Xbox... I think it's project gotham... it's a lot of fun, you get points for cool slides and stuff... |

i know it seems like i'm beating up on you today - sorry, not my intent ... Ruf is actually now a manufacturer in their own right. they *do* buy parts from Porsche - like body-in-white chassis to start with, and engine bits. i get the feeling from reading the pre-buzz that Porsche and Ferrari (by name) are in the new Xbox' Forza Motorsports. Costco now has that on 'pre-order' basis and they're claiming May 3 release. i'll believe it when i see it, but when i see it, i'll buy ... anyway, my guess is, Microsoft bought the exclusive rights to the 'name' cars ... (and yes, i've been convinced by others that GT4 for the PS2 is similarly 'must-have' so i can see two in my future...) |

I know you aren't bustin' my balls on purpose... fact is: you have more info on it than I do... I've always heard of RUF as I described.. like a modifier of PORSCHE, not a start from scratch manufacturer... I know they manu. many of their own parts... I was not aware they were seen as a full-fledged manufacturer... my bad

i think it's just in the last year - possibly two - that they got their manufacturer's certification...
so what you said of the did in fact used to be true, but it has fairly recently changed... |

I just bought GT4 after I played it in the store and managed to wreck my car in turn two and eleven at SEARS pretty badly. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif)
Rather do that on TV than in my '14. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) KT |

Need For Speed - Porsche Unleashed
You can race everything from a 550, 914 (four cyl only), to a 996 turbo, 959, and all the GT cars of three years ago. After you get tired of driving, try Acecombat 4, SSX3 (snowboarding), and HotShots3 or 4 which is one of the best golf video games ever. PS2=lots of fun, carpel tunnel, occasional po'd spouse (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif) |

someplace i have bookmarks to sites with NFS:PU 914.6 models. i never really got into PU and haven't tried the user-written models - but they're out there if you look for them - at least they used to be... and you mean there's a version of golf that's even *less* active than the real version? the miracles of modern technology... |

I used the user-defined cars on the PC version... can you use them on the PS1 version of PU?

This is hilarious. My 17 year old nephew is out from Minnesota this week and we picked up a PS2 and GT4. I was driving the 2000 Ruf 996 and he was in a BMW M5 and he smugly said I have a better car so I'll wait up for you. I was ahead of him by the first corner and he never caught me again! LOL
Pretty realistic stuff. Infineon feels almost like the real thing to me however joystick driving just doesnt do it for me. Whats the best wheel etc to use with GT4? |
