Distributor "o" ring Options

Im a real newbie when it comes to mechanics, so dont laugh too hard (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) - I want to replace the distributor "o" ring. How do I pull the distrubutor out to replace the ring? If I take it out, will the timing be off when I reinstall it? Hey I said no laughing

yes, the timing can be off. Mark a line with a piece of chalk on the distributor and the case and reline them up. Don't move the car at all when the distributor is out.

Tod, if you're gonna be working on your 914, you should download the factory manual http://www.914world.com/downloads or at least buy the Haynes manual.

Why do you want to replace this ?? I have never seen one fail unless it rips when your pulling the dizzy out.

The reason I want to replace it is I have a small oil leak somewhere inbetween the oilcooler seals and the top of the motor. The oil cooler seals i did last summer and they are fine. The oil sender is fine, as is the oil filler seal - all which were replaced. The pushrod tube seals seem fine too. So I cant figure out where the leak is originating from so I figure maybe replace this seal to rule out one less thing.
any other ideas where it could be comming from???

Man Tod I'm impressed. My engine's got so much spilled oil baked on in that area I'd never see an oil leak till I have a puddle on the floor of the garage. I'm sure there are a few nuts and electrical connectors buried in the goo. Come to think about it I wonder if oil is a decent conductor. That might explain some weird electrical problems. I suppose I'll have to clean it up someday, but for now outa sight outa mind. Hope you find your leak.

Tod pictures are a lot like clothes, they can look really good but only hint at what's underneath. My car is pretty nice but like so many 30 year old cars its got some problems like old rubber, some rust, and the baked on goo that used to be oil. Still I doubt I'll ever get rid of it, just too much fun.

Come to think of it, it gets more enjoyable as it ages, like wine and women.

You may be able to remove the dist without disturbing the timing...Leave the dist clamp tight and remove the one 13mm nut that holds the clamp to the engine block. You may be able to lift the distributor stright up and out of the engine. Dave H

Another thought... Oil Leak...Check your oil pressure sender- it's next to the dist and they can leak from the copper o-ring or from the sender itself. Dave H

the oil pressure sender is fine. No leaks from that.
So Im kind of puzzled where it could be comming from.

Oil leaks on the air cooled engine migrate all over so, it's frustrating. I've had my car finished for 15 years and little mileage but, I had this pesky leak. I adjusted the valves and did an oil change recently and found I had left off the sealing ring on the drain plug. It always looked like a drip comming from the front ot the engine on my garage floor. DH
