I have some relatives that are flying to LA, then eventually driving across the border to TiaJuana, do they need a passport to drive across?

nope.
just make sure you all have a valid Drivers License and buy mexican auto insurance. I cannot stress this enough. A little fender bender without insurance, and they do drive like crazy, and you're at fault and in jail. have fun, brer |

You'll be fine. Just remeber, you are a guest and are percievced as wrong in the accedent. You can park at the trolley station and walk across the boarder. Its easy, I just did it today.

How odd that Mexicans can walk into the US, buy a van, and sideswipe every car in town on their way to work, and it's no fault..
Just a tiny thing... that grates my nerves. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif) M |

Last time I went down there I parked on the US side and walked over. Take a bus to downtown. Why? Parking is tough, few speak english, and there is a brutal traffic going back north. You will need your ID to walk back over, even if you are blue-eyed blond. Dont stray off Revolucion blvd - not safe, esp. at night.

You don't really need them but if you have one you should take it. You are after all entering a foreign country and since 9/11 you want to have it if something goes wrong. Like the IRS, in Mexico you are guilty until proven innocent. Mexico is also on the "Do not travel list" and on the third tier of MegaKiller countries, so keep this in mind. Last but not least, beware of vans once you are back (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

I've always left my car on the US side and walked in. If I were going farther down south I'd drive. I'd get Mexico insurance if I were to drive across that imaginary line in the dirt no matter what.

Alberto's advice is correct. If you have a passport, bring it. These are different times after 9-11. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)
