so, i'm designing a website for a fellow club member and i'm wondering how far i should take this browser compatibility thing ...

right now, it's working great on

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or better
Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or better

i have NOT tested it on Netscape yet and my question is, should i even bother ???
the site is using quite a bit of JavaScript (think DHTML) and stuff like IFRAME etc. as well as CSS ...

your input is appreciated, as always ...

I wouldn't bother... but that's just me.

I write a lot of apps for our company's internal website. I can't tell you how nice it is to know precisely all the details of your end user.

Safari is based (kinda) off the Geko engine. From our experience, if it works in FireFox, it'll be ok in Safari.

You know how I feel about this subject. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

Design web pages for the least common denominator to reach the widest audience. If you don't do that, at least *know* what browsers your new web site won't work with and explain that to your client so they also know.

Test it with a newer version of Netscape. You may find that it only takes a few minor tweaks (if anything) to make it work with all browsers.

damm, i'm good! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

the only thing that doesn't work in netscape is the transparency for my IFRAME ...
i'm looking for a "workaround" right now, but i can live with that if i can't find any.

time to open some beers!!!

You should try it with Netscape 4.7 just so you "know" it won't work with it. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

As far as any pre-Gecko version of Netscape, I just hide the stylesheets from it and make sure the content properly "linearizes," that is to say if you're using complex CSS and absolute positioning, just make sure the order of blocks in the un-styled file makes sense to the user who won't get the styled version.

In other words, for all intents and purposes, f*ck Netscape 4.*. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/fighting19.gif)

My philosophy is to follow the advice of Jeffrey Zeldman's book "Designing with Web Standards". He shows how to create sites that are compliant with Web Standards, yet degrade gracefully for users who use old browsers like Netscape 4.7 or bad browsers like Internet Explorer (any version).

I agree with Gint - you design so that every person who views the page will see something informative, even if it doesn't look exactly the same in every user's experience.

don't have a MAC, don't want a MAC, sorry ... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

Updated List:
-----------------
MS Internet Explorer 5.0+, everything works perfect
Mozilla Firefox 1.0+, everything works perfect
Netscape 7.02+, everything works perfect, except transparent IFRAMEs
Opera 7.54u2+, everything works perfect, except transparent IFRAMEs

not too bad at all! i can live with the IFRAME problem, all it does is show the frame on a white background, which is OK because all it is is text and form elements anyways ...
