I'm thinking I'll spend the summer working on a 2-wheel project. Like an old Vespa or something. Thought I'd throw up a flag and see if anyone here is into that kinda thing, or knows of a forum like this one for scooters.

I used to own a 1967 Lambretta SX200 Special two-stroke, four speed with stage 6 modifications. 22 HP up from the original 11. Top speed: 90 mph without bodywork (they call it riding scalely). Enough to get you in trouble real quick. There are a lot of good Vespa's to buy including Rally 200's and a ton of afterrmarket parts. Keeep in mind that you are dealing with old 1960's, 1970's technology and a lot of pot metal parts. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

Yeah, I'm sure there are lots of upgrades. The guy at the local vespa dealership told me the magic number is $3,000. Said "You can spend $500 on a scooter and sink $2,500 into it, or you can spend $2,900 and it'll need a $100 something...but you ALWAYS end up at $3k."

We'll see...there is some cool stuff out there...

An old bicycle riding friend of mine owns a local scooter shop a few blocks from my house. From conversations I've had with him, the dollar amounts you mention sound about right. He's a good guy and may be of some help. Here's his website (his name is Steve):

http://www.atomicbrownscootershop.com/

Another friend and fellow pro photog, is the current prez of the national Vespa club. I think he just finished in 2nd place in a "cannonball run" style, east coast to west coast run on his Vespa.

He knows everyone in the country that owns a Vespa. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

He might be of some help in hooking you up with a "project scooter" in your part of the country. Click on club info and then go to staff for his contact info.

The way gasoline prices are climbing, a Vespa project may be very smart (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

I have a friend with an old Cushman, he's upgraded it to a diesel engine, is a "former" Hells Angel so the Cushman is badged. Next time I'm out at his place I'll grab some pics.

I'd like to get my hands on an old Mustang Motorcycle. Small enough to be considered a scooter, I guess.

My best,
Mike D.

I'm just thinking it'd be more fun to putz around with. Get one I can run into the ground this summer, then fix er up in the winter in my basement.

These suckers get like 45mpg. I'm only 8mi from the office...could be fun one or two days a week.

Oh MAN I would love to have one of my three old Vespa's back! I have owned 2 px250e and a 125 or at least I think it was a 125, I was living in Bermuda at the time and it may have ended up in the Gulf Stream... Now that was SOME FUN!

Love the whole metal case thing and full grip twist gear selector!

I'm thinking I'd look pretty sporty on this one. Bet it could take a 914 in a drag race.

Goped vs V8
