Usually a CW thing or a race reg that people don't like 16s.
15s are getting hard to find decent rubber on wider wheels. I have a friend with NICE 15x10s.. He put glass on top and he uses them as an end table. |

Oh, I thought it might have been a fitment thing I wasn't aware of.........I suppose tires will run quite a bit more for 16's VS 15's.

Nah....typically the taller the wheel, the shorter the side wall on the tire and hrasher the ride. Most people on passenger cars will keep the overall height to close to the stock height....
The 914 came with a "comfort Package" that included 14 inch wheels with tall side walls.... 70-89 911s have a factory warning NOT to go with 18 inch and above "ricers wheels" due to the suspension being designed with the side wall height in mind. |

nope ... but wider tires (think bigger than 245) are equally hard to find for 16" rims these days! ask me how i know. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif) Andy |

i have 16's on my 911 for the street, and i like the selection of tires. but 15's are 'period correct' for a long-hood 911 and give you 1/2" instant lowering (relative to 16's) with no loss of suspension travel. as well as a bit of a gearing advantage. it's hard to find suitable street tires for wide 15" wheels - but i expect a good supply of racing tires (i.e. - Goodyear and Hoosier slicks) in 15" for a good long while. i'm still looking for a pair of authentic 15x9" Fuchs. it's not a high-priority item, but it's on my list... 9" is, BTW, the widest 16" Fuchs originally made. RSR's ran 15"x11" rears... |

I'm pretty sure that is incorrect...I thought the warning is for the early 964/993 cars...they use an aluminum suspension which is more succeptible to the shock/harsness of the lower profile tires. |

Even 245s are getting hard to find for 16" wheels. A 225/50 tire seems like a popular size, but any bigger size gets scarce. Wonder if 17" wheels will be considered "small" for a sports car soon? |

A lot of the early "S" cars had aluminum suspension parts as well....and thinking back....I believe there were two warnings....the one you mentioned from Porsche AG and the one from PCNA that extended the warning to earlier cars.... |
