OK, my next project is to service the transmission in the 74. (Sitting on the floor of my garage.) I want to drain and add new fluid. Can anyone tell me what size allen head driver I need to remove the plug? I assume I then turn the tranny over on its side to drain? What and how much should I refill the tranny with? Finally, the plastic bushing where the shift rod connects to the tranny looks OK, should I replace it, and if so, bronze or plastic? Last question, the transmission mounts are probably original, I have heard that it is less expensive to replace with 911 motor mounts. True or urban myth? Thanks. 1. I think it is 17 mm. Open the bottom one to drain. Open the top one and fill to the top. Don't have to turn it on it's side.
2. Change it with plastic. 3. Don't know. |

You can stick a bolt head in the hex plug and back it out with a socket if you don't have a allen wrench the right size. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

VW tranny plug tool, 17mm as noted.
while I'm servicing, I remove the vent (note the direction of the hole!!), and plug with a wheel bolt. Then I take to a tranny shop for the cleaning. Then I replace the input and output seals. Clean up the vent and reinstall (get hole direction correct!!!!). |

Thanks for the info, I called a local transmission shop and they advised using 80-90 weight gear oil. Does this sound right? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif)

That is a good choice for gear oil.
I believe the vent hole faces forward. In reverse you tend to lose fluid. I seal the tranny up for cleaning externally. I'm not sure what cleaning chemicals they use, but it works. I don't get contaminated wash water all over my driveway and lawn. If there is crap in the drained oil, then it is rebuild time anyway. I like having a nice clean tranny before replacing the seals; much less chance of dirt getting inside. Anyone know what was printed on the label stuck on the bellhousing? I have seen the remains of a label there, but don't see anything printed. On mine it was on the starter side. |

17mm allen socket. 80-90-140 GL5 ONLY. Remove the fill plug first, just so you know it'll come out, then the drain plug. Drain it into a pan, take the old oil to be recycled. DO NOT use GL4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, or any mixture (i.e., GL4/5), or additive of any kind!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't let the counterman tell you any different!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Takes like 5+ pints. The Cap'n

Thanks Capt. Now all I have to do is get my mechanic buddy to lend me that 17mm allen head socket, and off we go. The only thing that pisses me off is that the PO decided to paint the tranny black. Rattle can job no doubt. Well, I can't see trying to remove the paint, so I will just live with it. At least the tranny shifts good. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/driving.gif)

When filling (via the top hex bolt hole), fill until the oil just starts to spill back out. Thats how you know it full. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) good luck |

the vent faces forward, 45* outboard from the center line of the trans case. haphazard, a 17mm bolt and 2 nuts. jam nut the 2 together and use the 17mm bolt head in the drain hole. turn out with inner jam nut. with trans in car loosen the fill plug FIRST.
