Those steel cross-bars in your rear trunk... are those part of something else or just to reduce body flex?

Those are part of the tubular back-bone of the car. They run from the tranny cross-bar all the way up to the front A-arm mounts.

Otherwise, I fear the 3.6 would try to fold the car in half.

If you look very carefully in this picture you can see the tubing running from front to back:
