So a few months ago I bought my first 914. It had a lot of work, but I thought I'd give it a go. During dismanteling I discovered the body had loads of rust. Cricitcal rust.
I dind't dare to sneeze while being around the car, because it might fell apart. That car was a steep learning curve for a newby like me.

Anyway, I sold the car to somebody who was up for the job and who had more experience (also in welding), and my search for a 914 started. Again.

Well, I found one. Here it is. It's a 1973 2.0, new complete paint job, recently restored.
Of course it cost me some more $$$, but I think it was really worth it and it this one matches my technical skills a bit better.
Needs work on the brakes, electral (some gauges/switches dont work), install Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio and Hirschman antenna (thanks member 914Sixer for taking the effort to scan and mail me the mounting pattern), some optical work like the center wheel caps, replace some lenses, maybe install original FI since it came with the car and I have it. install the appearance console with gauges etc.
And of course all the stuff I didn't see yet or come across in the future.

But: I am so happy with this car. I can just sit in my garage and look at it and then time passes quickly. I'm 38, but I feel 18 again when I'm looking at the car. I know, sad, but that's what the 914 virus does, right? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

That car is very nice. Good luck with it! I assume it's a true European model, considering where you are... Also, I think you saved a lot of money by buying a more expensive car. If that makes any sense. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smoke.gif)

Thats a great looking 914! A much better start. I have almost pulled the trigger on a few but the rust always scares me. Hopefully I can get into this one Ive had my eye on in the next month.

As others have said, enjoy the car a little and when winter hits, then you should tackle the FI conversion

If it is eropeen spec you have the 100 hp 2 like in my 914. It runs strong and a lot better than the 1,7 80 hp it replaced. (With the original D-jet)

The European-spec 2.0 had D-jet EFI. Only the European-spec 1.8 (engine code AN) had carbs, and they were a pair of single-throat Solexes.

Nice, car, though. Looks like it is Euro-spec, which is very cool! It seems like most 914s we hear about in Europe are re-imports from here, so it's awesome to see a car that has (likely) stayed on its home continent all its life.

Yes, it originally had Djet FI. It came with the sale, but in a box. So I will put original FI back in time.

And yes, it's an original EU model. Was sold in Germany and stayed there until 2006.Then it went to Belgium where I bought it. I was specifically looking for an EU model, in a solid state. So really happy with this find!

Will you be keeping it stock or improving" on it. I'm one who believes that you should start with the nicest car you can afford and then build it up. This means flares and 3.6 aren't out of the question.

Just a quick update;

Yesterday I went to the 'RDW', an organisation where you can file for a Dutch licenseplate, so you can drive your car on dutch roads.

I had to drive for about 20 kilometers to get there and I decided to drive the 914.
I had done some work on the 914 so I thought it would be fine.
Well, I made it home again, but man, what a drive!

First of all, I enjoyed driving it. All went fine on my way over there, apart from some shofting-issues, but once done my 914 would start. I had enough gas, enough power in my battery, engine turned over, but wouldn't start. And I started smelling fuel...
With a bit of fooling around I got my engine running again...looks like the mixture to my engine is very rich.

On my way home there where A lot of 'minor explosions' in my exhaust, sounded like fuel exploding there. I'm not sure if I am using the right words, but it was the sounds of unburned fuel in my exhaust. The car jumped out of 4 & 5th gear a lot and at one point I was holding my gear shift knob in my hand...and my hand wasn't anywhere near the lever... :-)

To sum things up: it was hard work getting my 914 home again, but I managed.
Now I have to adjust the engine mixture (I have dual carbs) and adjusting the gear, because I know the gear shift lever is not connected the right way, it needs some adjusting.

I've never done both things (adjusting gear and engine mixture), so I'll have to do some online searching. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be greatly appreciated.

But hey....I drove my 914 for the first time! Yay! A lot of people kept looking at my car and I had a big smile on my face for the entire trip. Man, I love this car!

Sounds like a motor mount broke. That you make the engine and trans jump around.

As for the fuel, it could be lots of things. Start by pulling the tank, replacing the hoses and front tank screen. Work your way to the rear.
