OT Darwin winner for 05 Options

ROBBERY UNDER ARMS.

The following mind-boggling attempt at a crime spree in Washington USA
appeared to be the robber's first (and last), due to his lack of a
previous record of violence, and his terminally stupid choices:

1. His target was H&J Leather & Firearms, A gun shop specialising in
handguns.

2. The shop was full of customers - firearms customers.

3. To enter the shop, the robber had to step around a marked police
patrol car parked at the front door.

4. A uniformed officer was standing at the counter, having coffee before
work. Upon seeing the officer, the would-be robber announced a hold-up,
and fired a few wild shots from a .22 target pistol. The officer and a
clerk promptly returned fire, the police officer with a 9mm Glock 17,
the clerk with a .50 Desert Eagle, assisted by several customers who
also drew their guns, several of whom also fired, The robber was
pronounced dead at the scene by Paramedics.

Crime scene investigators located 47 expended cartridge cases in the
shop. The subsequent autopsy revealed 23 gunshot wounds. Ballistics
identified rounds from 7 different weapons. No one else was hurt in the
exchange of fire.

Here we are at the end of March and we already may have the 2005 winner
of the Darwin Award for stupidity. This guy is going to be hard to beat.

okay - 1990 and 10mm, not a Desert Eagle.
i remember that event now.

a Desert Eagle is not a good defensive weapon, due in at least some part to the availability of ammunition that will both reliably expand and reliably cycle the gas-operated action.

(i have a whole pile of .44 Magnum cartridges that would be potentially useful except they won't cycle reliably. FWIW - PMC StarFire will...)

You need a reloading press! Then you can tune loads perfect for your pistol. Better reliablilty (in an auto), better accuracy, and cheaper than factory ammo. (you know this already (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) )

i do know that, especially for the .308 - but i have more than enough activities and too little time and money for them. i won't get into the liability issues of handloads in a defensive situation, although in many ways PA is not too different from NV (except of course for Philadelphia, where i do not live, that wants to be another NYC, Chicago, California, or Massachusetts).

the DE can be picky, with its gas operation. the SIGs are much more forgiving, and the Glock pretty much always gets factory loads anyway (in part due to manufacturer's stipulation (prompted i have no doubt by liability issues) and that defensive environment thing...)

the Eagle wouldn't be my first choice in a residential defensive encounter, because i have neighbors here, not at all like NV (where my property backed onto about 250 acres of BLM land...). but i do keep it on the nightstand primarily as a deterrent. a .44 Magnum Desert Eagle with a 50mm red-dot sight is a BIG handgun...

I don't get the whole liability scare regarding handloads. If someone attacks you and you hit them with a shovel does it make any difference whether you bought the shovel at Home Depot or made it from a kit? The only thing that is relevant is whether or not force was necessary.

that makes sense to you and me, which is why we'll probably never be asked to serve on juries for such cases. in a criminal action, there'd be no issue if you respond with appropriate force.

it's the ensuing wrongful death civil case you have to worry about, where the burden of proof is far lower and juries more easily swayed.

if you defend yourself with a bat, because it's available, your average juror will understand that. if you turn it into a mace by adding spikes, the argument will be made that you were just waiting for an opportunity to inflict great bodily injury.

similarly, the argument will be made that if the ammunition available to normal citizens wasn't "deadly enough" for you and you had to make your own, you must be an evil person.

which is a bit why many police departments (LA County Sherrif's, for instance) equip officers with 147-gr FMJ 9mm ball. everyone is taught to keep shooting until the threat is eliminated, and a single gunshot wound is (statistically) pretty survivable. but ball (as i know you know) tends to make neat holes rather than expand with an incapacitating energy dump, therefore, more neat little holes will be required to stop the threat. that's not as survivable, and there are fewer injured felons to subsequently sue the department, the city, the state...

(mind you, i'm not defending the argument that handloads are litigation bait, i'm just telling you it's out there. i really recommend Massad Ayoob's "In The Gravest Extreme" for more on the subject.)

Last year (or the year before) the Darwin Award was given to a guy who used the ball washer on a golf course to wash his own. Resulting in them being torn off. I use blue tips aka HydraShocks....basically bbs in a gell that hit the target and expend all the energy RIGHT THERE, RIGHT NOW. You don't get up...they also don't thru a wall and kill some innocent bystander a mile away.
