Just passing along the news...

Porsche Motorsport North America + Penske Motorsports = Le Mans Prototype 2

A new LMP2 program was officially announced at Road Atlanta just minutes ago. Set to debut at this year's Petit Le Mans will be a new Porsche prototype, run by Penske Motorsport. The final two races of this season (Petit and Laguna Seca) will serve as tests for the new prototype before the team embarks on a full 2006 campaign.

PMNA and PCNA commissioned Porsche AG to design and build the car. Peter Schwarzenbauer (PCNA President and CEO), "Our American racing customers have made it clear to us that they would like to move up several levels in ALMS competitions, as would we. We believe this new Porsche prototype program will provide the perfect means to do so and will generate added enthusiasm for sports car racing in America, especially with Penske Motorsports as our partner and initial entrant."

IOW - high gas prices are taking the wind out of the sails of Cayenne volume, and they need to look like a car company again for a while...
