I have recently been told factory warranty replacement engines have stars to designate that being the case ...

Just to close the loop, this is incorrect. Factory replacements were usually blank/unstamped cases.

Sorry, I failed to consider that a Euro 914 6 engine could have landed here in the US of A
A 901 / 36 is a European 914 6 engine.
NO 6 cyl. Porsche ever had the engine number and type # at that location, only the 914 6 or maybe, maybe a 904 /6
...... 2 or three were made ! or a 906 . It was put there so that it could be seen in the mid-engine location.
( BTW, thank you for the quote and for acknowledging the contribution )

Posted to the bird 911 forum that I have a 6 cyl. case with numbers pictured.

One case half has 2 numbers on it. It looks as though one of the numbers is not genuine but the other is 914.

What do you guys think?

I looked up the fan strap ser # and it comes back to a 79 911 SC Japan engine.
I've seen several org. 6 cases and the # stamping looks the same from the others that I've seen. With that said the ser # looks to have been added on the org 914-6 case. Not to mention that the SC case was made out of aluminum by that year.

I was thinking about how a euro 914/6 case could end up in Western Canada.
Best guess would be someone in the service returning home?

some got brought in when the grey market Porsche importing was big late 70-80s..one sold down in seattle area a couple of years ago. my son and I put the engine back in it so it could be transported to CA.

I actually looked at the 914-6 in 1978 and passed , it was a mess back then,rusty.. Tyler bought it, drove it 1 mnoth before the trailing arm mount tore off,,sat on jackstands since 1978

there was also a euro 72 p14-6 for sale in seattle about 1983, passed on that one also , every corner had been hit.. Its still in seattle or Arizona,, but restored as a GT lookand is grey ..og was orange

The 914 wasn't sold in Canada till something like '71 or '72 (fall '71 would be a '72 car), so the /6 was likely imported.
