Trying to figure out the guts of my 2.0 so that I can have my carbs tuned for the engine. How do I identify this, is this the bolt on web cam gear, or is it stock, and is the number on the cam significant?
Thanks Chris (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/i219.photobucket.com-13409-1474757784.1.jpg) |

On further inspection (cleaning) the outside of the cam end cover says "patented dial in cams"

Some cool info I've found (vwvortex)
QUOTE There's a paragraph on it in Per Schoroder's book "Volkswagen Sport Tuning for Street and Competition". It's starts as full advance at low RPM and retards at high RPM. There is a bunch of weights and springs that centrifugally retard timing as RPM increases. Techtonics dyno it with about a 2hp gain down low without a loss on the high end. It was quite expensive at around $300.00. Anybody have any more info? Attached image(s) |

Statically adjustable, manual setting. Back to back dyno and track testing to measure theoretical advantage. https://www.google.ca/search?q=advanced+ret...EhxcvC4mbTYM%3A https://www.google.ca/webhp?sourceid=chrome...%20valve%20lift http://www.badasscars.com/index.cfm/page/p...prod/prd358.htm https://www.google.ca/webhp?sourceid=chrome...le+valve+timing As long as there have been piston engines, there has been variable valve and spark timing. Really, clockwork derived from water wheel grindstones, for a millennium of industrial revolution. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) / |

The Dial-in-cams 914 cam was not automatic.
IIRC, only their belt drive external cam gears had that feature. |

Advancing the cam will add more low end power, while retarding the cam will add power in the upper rpm range. Each does this at the cost of the other.
Advancing or retarding the cam also shifts the powerband up or down the rpm range. The cam could be any brand with just a Dial-in Cam gear. |

Thanks for the input on the cam gear everyone! The car put down 118hp with hit set the way you see it, so I don't see any reason to screw with it, just an interesting part I want expecting to find in there! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif) |

The best way to be sure would be to measure the timing and lift with a degree wheel and dial indicator mounted to measure from the push rod to make the math easier .
