Also, if you're going to have yours rebuilt, ask the shop if they can increase the amperage ... I believe the stock alternators are only 55 amp IIRC.

Possible charging problems:

1. Charge light on dash must work.
2. Battery cables, ground cables and alternator harness must be in good shape. Battery cables can corrode internally over time. Alternator body should have ~0ohms resistance to battery ground.
3. Relay board.
4. Regulator.
5. Alternator.
6. Belt.
7. Battery.

FWIW, the alternator and your entire charging system can be checked in the car before you take on any repairs. Any reputable auto electrical shop has the equipment to do this. It's worth spending some money to know exactly what's wrong before you start paying for expensive parts and spending your time doing repairs.

I was just looking at the factory workshop manual, and it cites a maximum of 50 A for the 022 903 023 stock alternator for the 914.

I found the most difficult thing was the reinstall. Trying to hold the alt with one hand and hook up wires and align bolts with the other was tiring. Finally ssupended the alt with a piece of bailing wire at the approximate correct position and the rest was easy with both hands free. Hopefully this trick will help.
