Starter issue on my 914
-when I turn the ignition switch I can hear the starter spin but it doesn't engage to turn the engine over. On a 2nd or 3rd try it engages and works
-what is the problem and what parts do I need to repair it?

That doesn't make sense. The solenoid has to engage before the starter turns. The solenoid is in a sense THE connection that tells the starter to spin.

Either something is wired really wrong, or you are pulling an ou812 post.

Take some pics of your starter and the wiring connections and share here so we have something to work with to help you.
