Hi Guys, It's time to do some routine off season maintenance on the 914. The car has a 2.2s spec motor. My question is, how do -6 owners adjust the ignition timing prior to a valve adjustment? It looks damn near impossible to get a timing light reading. I know cutting into the firewall is an option for ease of access but I'm not willing to get the cutoff wheel out yet. Does everyone drop the motor and tune at a shop that has a running motor stand? I'd just like to double check the ignition before setting the valves. Thanks in advance.

Taking off the exhaust adds time and materials, but makes life much easier. I take 5/16" off the ribs on the turbo lowers, never had a problem with leaking or warping.

Ethan,
Question regarding your suggestion to replace the top row of studs and nuts with allen head cap screws.... I looked and the turbo valve covers are about 25mm thick so assuming that you allow another 10mm for engagement in the head (is that enough?), is there the room to get a 40mm long bolt back in the hole and a cut down allen wrench on it? |

That's a great question. I actually don't remember off the top of my head. I will be doing Valve adjustment #2 on my new engine this week, and will documenting the process with pictures. I will report back with fastener length and removal technique.

So if you want to "see" your pulley and case when timing, try this. Pull the hatch cover off with a few bolts, and aim your timing light.
Also, change the belt and adjust for tension while at it. .. shown on type 4 as my 911 engine is not yet in... Attached thumbnail(s) Attached image(s) |

I am taking PK's advice on milling depth of 5/16" removed. And, I plan on poking the 6 engine in early next week once my 2.2L is out of the way.

There's a cool tool made by a pelican member that replaces using feeler gauges.
A bit spendy though at $85. http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/SuperC...L_pg2.htm#item6 |
