We have a 1970 1.7 running on dual carbs. It has recently developed an intermittent problem of rough running when it happens it feels it is running on just 2 cylinders, really rough with loss of power and fuel smell in the cab.

It happened the other morning when we drove it for about an hour and we then stopped for about an hour and it was fine when we re-started. Then the next week it came on and off for the first hour of the journey and then was fine. On Wednesday this week we took the 914 out on a good long run and it was fine both ways.

Any ideas where to start looking for this problem?

Thanks!

Kate & Brian

Check compression.
Check for fuel.
Check for spark.
Check for air leaks.
Check the carb sync.
Check for debris in the carbs.
Check float adjustments and such.

Sounds to me like a stuck float or needle valve.
that would cause one side to flood and not fire on those two cylinders.

Pull out the dipstick and smell it. Do you smell gasoline?
