I have a 75 1.8 engine in my car that is starting to smoke. It's worse in warmer temperatures and blows a puff of smoke after sitting at stop lights. Stop and go traffic seems to aggravate it as well. What do you guys think I'm looking at to fix the problem?I think the engine has about 85-K miles on it. I'm hoping all I have to do is a quick refresh on the heads and new rings.

You need to do a leak down test to determine if it's the top or lower end. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

The "bottom end" is everything inside the crankcase. Which a leak-down doesn't check and which doesn't contribute to smoke in the exhaust.

Re-ringing and doing the heads (especially replacing the valve guides) should help with the smoke. It might be prudent to crack open the bottom end and re-do that as long as you have it all apart anyway...
