The cup is nylon, the ball is steel, there is 1 washer under the ball in stock config, adding additional washer under the pivot ball offsets the mechanism.
If not the mechanism will pull against a solid structure causing the weakest point to give way ie the sheetmetal.

What where the chances that a great bud lived just a few blocks from me with 2 914s in the same colors as 2 of mine. We both have a 1970 -6 in yellow and a 4. Sorry that my lift would not fit in your garage.
