Gaah! One cable end is silver, the other is gold! I'm nowhere near as dedicated as you are, but that bothers me!! --DD (IMG:style_emoticons/default/av-943.gif) I purposely didn't mention that just to see which OCD member would point it out. Congratulations (IMG:style_emoticons/default/first.gif) So here's the story on that. The left cable is NOS OEM that I bought 30 some years ago. The right cable is new OEM I just received. Seems Porsche is cheaping out. The other end was plated. But yep, I know a guy who can fix it so that is exactly what is going to happen. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) |

Nice work. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif)
I've previously used the old Eastwood Tin Zinc kit and it worked exceptionally well. Polishes to a chrome like finish and a bit of clear coat seals it. I still have fasteners on a 1964 Honda Dream restoration that look nice after 20 years. I've investigated the Caswell system and it always seemed to be pretty top notch. Of course all results are dependent on the user and process. Yours appears to be working nicely. Like the others, I'd lobby for a thread to share your results. |

Thanks guys. There's already a home plating thread in the classics forum. Maybe I should just tag on to that. Truth is, there is nothing I can add that isn't covered in these two videos as far as process since I'm pretty much copying him.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTupOgImpWo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBQDZI5xz4w I don't want to put him on the spot, but @doug_b_928 emailed me a really nice how-to using a cheaper epsom salt plating bath that saves even more $$ off what I did. We've been comparing notes and he's decided to switch to the Caswell bath, but I think the other process is still worth sharing. There are videos on youtube for that method too. |

Wow, nice how-to on the subject. Thanks for the education (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer.gif)
If I were 30 years younger, I'd be interested in doing all that - but ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/slits.gif) |

A quick update on one of the scattered projects I worked on yesterday. Started with these crusty old things.
and turned them into this. I had to throw my new Porsche cv joints into the shot. I'll be honest. I'm not sure it was worth the effort. It took a LOT of time and messy work to clean the grease out of those old things. By the time I figured out what a PITA it was going to be, I was too far in and had to see it through. So why did I even try? These are old 4-hole OEM boots that won't sling grease so I wanted to try to salvage them. One boot shows some minor fatigue in the rubber at the axle hole but the others look like new after a spritz and wipe down with 303 Protectant. All put the one with checks on the transmission side so it will be easier to keep an eye on and swap out if necessary. Here's a shot of the VW logo stamped on them. |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) Who's kit? Mine are in pretty good shape but were reupholstered in smooth vinyl rather than basket weave. Vinyl is hot enough. Smooth vinyl even worse. |

Thanks guys. 914Rubber kits. I'm really impressed with these. Just a couple things I would change, but minor. I'll post details later, but I wanted to get the teaser out there to see who would be first to call bull (IMG:style_emoticons/default/stromberg.gif) on the 303 comment. Congrats @BPic (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) Got to run to town to get some supplies now.

I'm really impressed how far this has come since last spring Brent. I'll be making my annual pilgrimage to your neighborhood (I think) the first weekend of May. You may just be ready to tune carbs by then -- if not sooner.
