How tough is it to replace the speedo cable? I've had cars where you can just pull out the center part and replace it. Do I have the replace the entire cable on a 914...both the spring core and the outer sheath? If so, (I am stripping the interior so, that makes it a bit easier), how do I do this?

Yes, the whole thing including the sheath. It comes out into the engine bay, though you'll have to undo some folded-over metal tabs and probably feed it through from the cockpit.
