Surface rust? Sounds like a job for metal ready and por 15.

www.prp-porstore.com

It works wonders, and if its just surface rust, this is just what the doctor ordered.

take a small screwdriver or icepick to it... if you get pin-holes, cut and re-weld in a new piece... if it is solid, por-15, rust encapsulator, ospho, whatever floats your boat...

surface treatments:
ospho is good and cheap(converts rust and acts as a primer) , and you can paint over itwith some rustoleum for the cheap/easy fix... great for spots you can get to easily if you HAVE to do it again in 5-10 years, which you probably won't... this fix is better than people realize, but rust encapsulator is better for preventing the "creep"

rust encapsulator is easier(less products) than por-15... I like this stuff.

many people swear by por-15, but by the time you use marine clean and metal ready(basically the SAME as ospho, but supposedly the POR-15 NEEDS metal-ready), and THEN use por-15... you have done a lot of work... and spent a lot of dough.
