I need to have my altenator rebuild on my 2.7 and I've removed the fan and housing from the engine but can't seem to be able to seperate the alternator from this assembly. There is a round "nut" with two flat sides and a notch in the middle ...is this special tool time again? The alt is a Marchaval or however it's spelded (spelt?,lol...) Anyone here come across this? TIA.

The alternator is a tight fit in the fan housing (ring), but it does come out. You need to remove the 6mm (10mm wrench size) nuts around the perimeter of the alternator, then tap on each of the through bolts with a brass or copper hammer, going round and round, until the alternator slides out. Might be a good idea to leave the nuts on just to the end of the threads to prevent mushrooming the threads. The fastener you describe is unclear to me, but it has nothing to do with removing the alternator. BTW, you DO have the fan off, right?

Like the Krusty one said....remove all the nuts on the back of the fan ring and give a few taps with a dead blow hammer....it'll come.

BTW when reassembling....don't forget the bushing behind the alt between the ring and alt....ask me how I know.

You could also just take the ring and alt to the rebuild shop and have the guy at the counter do it.... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif)

Not like there's gonna be a lot of extra labor for him....

Cap'n thanks for your help, but I haven't seperated anything...the fan, fan housing and alternator are all still together. I figured removing this so called "nut" might free the fan, but it's not a normal looking nut and when it's turned the large bolt that it's attached to (comes out of the center of the alternator) turns with it, very easily. So, how does the fan come off?

The fan is easiest to remove when the assembly is still attached to the engine. But since it's already out....

Try giving it a shot of penetrant like Kroil, PB Blaster or anything BUT WD-40.....give it couple of taps with a dead blow hammer and pull on both sides. Remember there is a "key" on the alternator shaft that needs to be kept for future install....

Hey Doug, also there is a pelican tech article with a step by step that should be helpful.

Hey "Z", that fan won't just pull off unless I get that crazy looking "nut" off the alt shaft though, right? I think it'll need to come off first, and looks like it'll take a special tool..maybe it's an uncommon design because most are using Bosch alts instead of Marchaval? I'll look at it again this evening and try what you've suggested.

Doug,

There are several good therads from the past on this subject also.

Alternator search with username krk

I didn't look, but I vaguely remember Kim's 914/6 shroud removal thread being fairly descriptive with pics. Go have a look. There are some other good ones there as well.
