There's a '73 1.7 up for auction on Bring a Trailer right now. The car is Ravenna Green. The door jamb tag shows the color as L20, or orange. In the discussion on that discrepancy on the auction site, the seller and a purported second owner both claim that the green is original and that the factory made a mistake by placing the wrong ID tag in the door jamb. Has anyone here heard of another factory mistake like that?

Easy. A factory mistake is pretty unlikely.
What color can be seen through the perforations of the compliance sticker ?
OR..... Remove the aluminum door jamb tag.
What color is behind the tag ?

Factory error might be rare, but the pictures are pretty compelling. Green in the perforations of the compliance sticker, the old faded recall campaign sticker up front on green, inside the doors, under the undercoating chips, etc.

An incorrect paint code stamp on the door jamb plate is a known factory error. Its is rare, but occasionally has happened. Dave Pateman has records of several cars with this issue. The green through the safety compliance sticker dots is proof of the original paint color.

I had a '73 Sunflower Yellow L13K with a (factory error) code for Phoenix Red L32K.

Irrelevant ...

Every factory in Germany has union mandated beer available in the break rooms anyways.
