Hey everyone! i'm getting a 76' 914 2.0 back that i bought 9 years ago, the back story to this 914 is it grew up in the California desert for all of its life until someone in San Fran bought it from the original owner and then had the whole engine rebuilt and then person lost interest in it. I was able to buy it for $3000 back in 08' car had almost no rust and the typical gear grinds( could be avoided by double clutching). I drive it around for a few months until i gave it to my dad for a Christmas, he's the one that introduced me to the 914 world. He had one when he was in the navy and sold it when i was born so i figured i could pay it forward. I was moving around constantly for work and didn't have the time for it.
The car got picked from my house in California in 08/09 and made the journey on a trailer to salty jersey. My dad had plans to full restore this 914 and thats where it ended, the plans never came to light. After moving around the country I forgot about the 914 and life overwhelmed my dad with my mom getting cancer and the house needing repair, the porsche was forgotten. I'm back in NJ with a huge garage and figured id go visit the parents house to pick up some things, when i saw the 914 under a car cover (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) , tires half flat, and looked like the engine lid was slightly opened. When i peeled back the car cover, jerseys rust had started to take over and the air cleaner was off leaving the throttle body wide open to elements. Heres the problems I've discovered just from my visual inspection: 1) rust in-between the taillights more on the passenger side, probably about 4" wide. Doesn't go through the whole panel. 2) rear trunk lid rusted 3) passenger side fender starting to rust(about the size of a silver dollar) 4) corrosion near windshield on passenger side lower portion( will need to remove windshield to see how far it went.) 5) it looks like he cracked the windows and never rolled the up all the way so water got into the interior, no rust on the floor boards just mold and musty. 6) air box cover was left off for years allowing water to enter. I'm hoping it turns over 7) sail top vinyl needs to be replaced I will be documenting this restore as much as i can. Its sad because this car had no rust when i bought it. Any tips on where to start first? If anyone in south jersey knows of any parts or wants to lend a helping hand please let me know!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer.gif) |

lots think about but it might start up but do a few things first-
1. gas tank will need to be inspected and probably pulled and cleaned, while at it replace all fuel lines- 2. once that is complete make sure motor not seized up, if not and the intakes are cleaned out- I would just pull them and put new seals - plan on all new vac lines too- 3.- your transmission will not cost that much- get ahold of Dr. Evil(Mike L.) I think hes back on track rebuilding andmight even have some rebuild clinics lined up again - I did mine for about $500 , if he does it depends on parts but probably half of what you were estimating. 4. interior will be more depending on how deep you go- look to the 914rubber for seat recover kits, carpets, dash parts all seals and rubber for your car top windows etc and then new tires, and tune and drive- - bought mine about 8 years ago - car came from southern cal(29 palms ca) was a marine, came east to NC I bought it after it sat for 2 years- it turned over, it had compression, fired up with starter sprayed into the intake- but no fuel- it was clogged and needed new pump etc the vac lines and injection sorted- MPS was shot that was the big ticket item- started up after all that and ran it for 2 years before doing any new stuff- but don't do what I did - get rid of the rust first- if you need help Chris Foley in CT(Hartford) will help you. good luck and (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png) |

everything. imho, even the suspension done "just before you bought it" is now 10+ years old. Sitting. Rotting.
Take is slow. bag it and tag it could be about right. You certainly sound handy, so how much do you feel like doing yourself vs vending out? |

Are you taking it back to Arcata? A '76 needs smog in CA.

I spoke to DR EVIL years ago about doing a rebuild good to see he's back doing them and the clinics missed his last one in california since work stuff came up! Ill send him a pm once i get this thing out! the rust I'm paling on media blasting/walnut/ or soda most of it and see how that plays out. everything. imho, even the suspension done "just before you bought it" is now 10+ years old. Sitting. Rotting. Take is slow. bag it and tag it could be about right. You certainly sound handy, so how much do you feel like doing yourself vs vending out? the garage is prepped with tupperware bins, zip locks , and a good sharpie! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sawzall-smiley.gif) I'm planning on doing 90% of it myself unless i hit a wall. the trans was the big ticket item i was worried about but i think i can do it if i just take my time and read the manual. no way will i go back to Arcata, CA smog laws are horrible, in jersey its exempt. ill post pictures once its back to me hopefully tomorrow night and i can start documenting it. thanks for all the tips!! |
