Generally I'm putting pumps and filters under the tank or in the steering rack pocket.
Does the Mahle KL65 fit into the place a 1.8 normally sits ? I've found the stock square filters to hang up on the steering shaft and make R/R a messy operation

Under the tank on the driver's side? Sometimes, but it won't fit through the access port. So you'd have to pull the tank each time.

The KL 14 filter is a little bigger than the KL 11 that I would normally install in a stock setup and should still fit through the 'window' based on the dimensions on the Mahle web site.

I thought I'd share the advice I got from Mike Pierce relating to our Weber IDTP carbs, as it's a little different than what I'm finding in my research.

He suggested this 9101 fuel filter, and that it be installed before the carbs. It's Italian made and 10 micron. I believe it's designed as a replacement for 6N0-201-511A (Mahle) for Volkswagen Auto Group VAG. A catch is it has 8mm barbs, whereas the 914-6 fuel hose spec is 7mm ID.

He suggested that other types of filters, for non-fuel injection, will allow debris in and it can clog parts of the carburetor.

I notice most folks are installing their filters in front of the fuel pump. Of course, Mike is focused on carbs, so the fuel pump may not factor into his thinking.

I have a stock-style square one from Porsche. He suggested I throw it away. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to stick it in front of the pump. Though oddly enough, it is 9mm barb on one side an 7mm on the other. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

Not sure if this info will help or confuse things, but it's another datapoint from a reputable source.
