so this is a 1971 orange factory paint radio etc. targa top. only mod is 3 point seat belt and exhaust.

its been in second owners possession for over 30 years. she has had it stored in her garage has not ran or even tried to start in 15 years.

The body is in solid shape no rust we are discussing a price around 2500 but the great thing is she wants me to work it off on my lawn care as I have a lawn care business.

What are your thoughts?

What should I be concerned about when it comes to getting it road worthy?

Pics are the only way to know. $2500 could be good.. or too high.. or way too low.. and, we all know, they left the factory with rust ( (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) ) you just haven't found it yet.

A 1971 914 1.7L is not a very desirable 914, unless it is pristine. Anything can be fixed but, not to be discouraging, if it does not run it can only be considered and valued as a parts car. No car sitting around does well. To fix it you will at least need to check and probably rebuild/replace the:

Tires, wheel bearings, brakes, entire fuel system from tank to injection, engine, lights and electrical, shocks and suspension/shift linkage bushings.

Not to mention the esthetics - upholstery, paint, trim, door locks, carpeting, rubber bits.

If it has not run in 15 years there is a reason - is the tranny dead? Engine frozen? Wiring eaten by critters? It only takes time and money...and that could be a lot more lawn jobs. I suggest it is not worth more than about $1K in its current condition because of the work and risks involved. But some people don't make rational decisions.

Get some pics. Look carefully for ever little sign of rust.

If it won't start you can at least tell if the engine is frozen by putting it in fith gear and rocking the car a bit and see if the engine turns.

Is the FI still on or does it have carbs?

Does it look proper or a rats nest in the engine compartment?

It has at least $2k in parts. Just the (oem) steering wheel is worth $300, more if in great shape, lockset $300, Un cracked dash $800, etc. If it's even a low rust car it's worth the $2500 and a bonus if you're not putting out any cash. Close to you to boot. Good luck with your new 914. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

$2500 is a reasonable number for a car in "reasonable" condition.

It it really has very little rust, the $2500 is a great deal.

It's more of what you want to do with it. Are you flipping it? Without some skills and a lot of sweat equity, the upside is not huge. If you intend to drive and enjoy the car, I would do it.

Just my .02 , but it really is dependent on no rust in the battery tray area.

Yes. On an early car. Same as a 914-6. $800 all day long. If it's cracked then it's probably $100 but on two of the early cars I purchased that had been in storage for a long time, the dash was pristine.

Yep! $800 might even be low, I paid $950 for an early pristine dash 2 years ago.

so the deal is done. I unpacked the hoarder style garage it has been kept in for 15 years.

It is in really amazing condition. one ding, a couple minor rust bubbles on the exterior but the inside of trunk and hood around hinges and such are pristine no rust at all. door jams look sexy. it has the factory wheels but also comes with a after market set.

The emblems look great, it has factory manuals.

but yeah its going to be worth a lot of mowings and snow plows but I'm good with that.

I'm glad we agreed on price before I dug it out and pulled her outside. the owner would have wanted more judging from her reaction to the cleanliness of her. also I might have been tempted to agree to more!

I will try to upload images if I am able to since I am a knew member. if not anyone can send me there email for the info and images.

Congrats!

Now that it's in the daylight you can start to find the rust.

The fuel system will be you 1st task. I took out the tank, plumbed a tank out of a coffee can, and direct wired the fuel pump off a battery jump box (easy for me, as my pump had been relocated to the front). This let fuel circulate through the system. I did this over several days, changing to fresh gas fairly often. There was a lot of crap that came out, even with the fuel filer in place. This worked for me, as it started right up after (still running off the coffee can). Rough at 1st, one injector took a while to wake up.

Keep us posted!

Except the glove box cutout is not correct for an early car.

Pity 914 Rubber didn't make the dashes for both the early and late cars.

Now THAT would have been a winner. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

I've talked to mark. He's not ready to commit to another dash mold - yet.
