Happens on other forums as well. Flipper poses as an enthusiast and uses free expertise to maximize their flip.

One of the most egregious examples was on a MG forum a couple years ago. Young guy buys an MG and he and his GF are going to drive cross country. He's in college so people on forum give him lots of free new parts, free labor and even pitch in for a new set of tires. Probably totaled $2-$3K in parts alone not to mention all the free labor. Car shows up on craigslist a few weeks later.

My 2 cents, not that it matters to anyone. So he is trying to flip a car to make some $$. He didn't ask for free parts just some advice. The lady and him made a deal they were both happy with. Car has sat for 15+ yrs so it will need work. Is it worth the $12.9k he is asking for it, nope not even close, but $6-8kish, maybe?

I shouldn't be so quick to judge, but there's a lot of jealous rage built up since I would love and cherish that car.

Maybe for a Crèmesicle or a -6 just dug out of the garage. I would get it running and drive it. Love the color, wheels not so much.

But that is my point, he didn't rip her off. It has sat for a long time covered in crap in a garage. I can bet it is full of mouse crap, doesn't run, brakes need work, tires are shot and the list goes on. For $2500 she got a good deal on 71 that has sat since 93 according to the plate on the back of the car.

Now where he is crazy at is thinking it is worth $12.9k. He is fishing, nothing wrong with that, but the reality is anyone that looks at it in person will know it is not worth anything near that. If he gets it running and driving then his time is worth money and he should make some off it. If it were me I would get it to turn over (maybe running?) and market it as a running project car at $5-$6K asking price. I bet he would get many lookers and possible buyers in that range. At $12+ not so much. Again just my 2cents.

Thanks for the remarks group. I am not sure what the value is. I am not trying to slip anything past anyone thanks for the judgement.

If I paid 1.00 for the car then you guys would only offer 1.50? what I have invested in a car does not create the value as far as money goes. if the car is worth 2000 but I paid 4000 then no one is going to give more than the car is worth anyway.

I never said I was an enthusiast for Porsche, I was looking for advice from the forum that would have the best tp offer. I am a bmw m3 enthusiast not Porsche. I have been a member on the bimmer forums for close to a decade. I'm not shady or what ever you what to say. but if the lady and I made a deal at 2500 I am taking all the risk.

sure I posted an add to see what interest there was. And I was certain the stalkers of the 914 would submit my ad on the forums as they do with bmw's. I am not sure if this car is a keeper for me, I prefer more performance and frankly this not a car I want to mod, it would be best to leave her as she is factory.

I thank those of you who replied in my defense about making money on a deal. to the others not so much. I am not trying to ruffle feathers, or pull the wool over anyone's eyes. I posted how much I paid!! I could have said 5000 but what difference does it make. I have been honest, I have not asked for anything other than advice as this brand is new to me. my first thought was to keep it and have fun so what if I decided to sell it for profit. if its worth only 8k then so be it but I'm not going to sell her to you. I would only want an honest value for her. and the values range from 8k-15k online with similar mileage.

the people on forums are the worst and best critics for any car brand, I know that going into this post. they want to pay the least and want to get the highest value due to there emotional attachments.

I am sorry for coming to this group for knowledge and advice. But this is the group should appreciate a find like this more than running their mouths about my deal and say I'm pulling a fast one.

Cars are an emotional thing for enthusiasts, particularly enthusiasts of a specific model. I hope you weren't turned off to this forum, because I've been on a number of classic car forums, and 914world really does have the coolest and most helpful bunch of folks.

That being said, values online are ASKING prices. I keep tabs on listings for 914's and Karmann Ghia's almost daily because they're the two cars I'm obsessed with, and I see the listings that disappear quickly and the ones that stick around for weeks or months. $15k private sale price for a 1.7 would have to be a high quality, almost potential show quality condition car that has no rust and all mechanical and electrical systems are like new or rebuilt. A non-running 1.7 would max out around $6k. A driver 1.7 that's maybe a little scruffy (or garage-fresh!), but all mechanical and electrical systems work and no visible rust is going to bring you around $10k. Every bit of rust that shows, start subtracting $$$.

Whatever you decide to do, best of luck. But I'd take the recommendations to get the car running and just drive it for a month. If you don't think it's the most fun little go kart you've ever driven, then sell it. But give it a chance. I wrote these cars off for a long time, then I spent some time with one, and now I'm obsessed! Remember, performance doesn't only equal straight line speed. Performance is also about how little speed you need to lose to make it around a corner. In that respect a 914 is one of the best cars out there for the money.
