Picked up a stock taco plate with the shield and thought I would work on installing it while the engine is back out of the car (another story)

I have an Autometer gauge and the temp sender that came with it is 1/8 npt. I thought that the hole for the original sender was 1/4 npt but when I got a 1/4 npt-1/8 npt adapter it threads right into the taco plate up to the shoulder just using your fingers and does not tighten up like a pipe thread should.

I am sure this would leak oil the way it is. and I don't know how much I would trust Teflon tape to make up the difference.

Is the thread some metric oddity ?

Would an original style sender work with my Autometer gauge?
