Greetings, I am new to your board but not to the make or model. I have decided to build a 914 for my daughters 16th birthday. Contemporary logic is always buy the best car you can afford, however I can do all the work and its a father daughter project so we will be buying the most rust free car we can find, as put some sweat equity into the project.

I look forward to being a positive member, making new friends, and learning from the vast knowledge base.

I will pour over the classifieds, craigslist, etc etc, but I am looking for a candidate if anyone has leads.

Welcome to world, my 16 year old has a '73 914, same deal except father/son.
Personally the 914 is a safe car when driven sensibly.
What is FWB? Fort Walton Beach?

We live in a small coastal town in North Florida. No Interstate driving, highest speed limit in town is 45mph. The traffic is not bad. She dosent need 10 airbags, abs, active braking, and crumple zones to be safe. As for the rest of it, she wants to build something with dad, and Id prefer a 914 to a bug.

Don't rush to grab the first tub you see - they become available often and like Mark says, the blue one for sale presently is a good clean example based upon the photos.

However, with any purchase I would still lay eyes on it to make sure it is what you want and there are no hidden issues. These cars are old and rust as you know is their sworn enemy. Get a clean as you can find chassis and your build will be much easier.

The added plus: none of her friends will be able to drive the manual transmission. My kid went to college with a manual, never had to worry about everyone always borrowing her car!

My son is here from NYC for the holidays. While we were driving back and forth to the hospital to be with Super In Law, he mentioned the same thing. Never thought of it.

Both my sons drove 914's thru High School in rural Montana .................
No real issues. One dented fender, slid off the road while shifting on an tree shadow (ice).
One speeding ticket (pretty tough to do in MT., bad day, $5), that was the 70 hp car. One broken clutch cable.
Only problem I see living in Florida is that the top will be off most of the time at school and her friends will want to climb all over the car. Not Good. Hoods dent pretty easy. Doug's has dents on the roll bat from people walking on it. LOL.

It is great to see her have interest in cars and working on it. My plan is to have my twin girls more vehicle/shop knowledgeable than most boys in their classes. Even my wife knows how to change a tire if she had to.

My dad co- signed the loan for my 914-6 at the dealership
when I was 18..... 18 year old boy with a 6 was far more
a risk ... Still have the car in my 60’s.... I’ll never sell it.

My first 914 was intended to be for our son when he turned 16, passed along from a close friend of the family. Since it was not a practical car for him given a classic in the snow, salt, rain, and high-school parking lot, I took possession of the car and will be passed along to him when he can manage it with a garage of his own. However, for the last 6 years he has been driving it, working on it, appreciating it, and looking forward to full-time ownership.

Our kids grew up with manual tranny cars cars on the road and track with none of the nannies of today's tech-laden vehicles. They do their own repairs/mods, except my daughter, but she hangs in the garage and at least appreciates the work. All adults now with no accidents or senseless violations. She will be a better driver with this experience.

And I agree Cairo, spend extra if need be to avoid rust. And feel free to post photos and details of potential cars for feedback.

Aidan, I am a big car fan and got my first car in 1975 when I was 14 in NZ - My uncle helped me restore it and get it road worthy. I drove it up and down the driveway until I was legal at 15 to drive. I'll never forget that car. I also did some very stupid things in that car. Priceless.

So I understand the sentimental aspects and the great father/daughter aspects also. However, 2017 is a different time and place, no matter where you live. Its the other crazy person you have to worry about. Today, in my personal view, having any 16 year old have a daily driver without airbags is a risk that you really want to consider very carefully. If its not her daily driver then thats ok. Airbags were mandated in 1998, so there are many used cars out there with airbags.

Just my two cents worth, and not in any way imposing on your own judgement and views.
