Lots of time, degreaser, grinding, scraping, scrubing, Marine Clean, Metal Ready and POR-15 does do wonders to a 914's engine bay! One side down, one to go. The battery side was much worse shape than the relay board side of the compartment, so I'm over the the big hump. Once I've POR-15 everything, I'll go back and put of proper coat of orange over it.

Hope you're all having a good weekend,

it always feels much better to put the paint on than sanding it all off...good job!

Indeed it does! Still have lots more to do too. Found that the support plate for the jack point has some rust damage, so I'll need to replace that soon. It just keeps going and going and going. It's fun though, so nothing to worry about other than the fact that it's great outside and I don't have a teener to drive around in at the moment.

Looks good.

I found that the relay board bracket and hood release tube made the driver side harder to work on. Although there is more rust on the passenger side there is more room to work with once the battery support and tray are removed. Either way it is a crappy job.

Did you consider removing the seam sealer in the corners. I found rust underneath in areas, expecially in the deep recess in the top outer section. They really filled that area in with a lot of goop!

I was surprised to find very little seam sealer in the engine bay. There is some along the vertical corner seams that I went ahead and left in place, but there wasn't any piled in the corners. I bought a heat gun for removing the floor tar and seam sealer in the trunk, so removing it has become pretty routine. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

i've been there before too. one thing that worked good for me at final painting was to get half of the paint put in rattle cans, the rest of paint was loose. the rattle cans worked good for the upside down, hard to reach places.then the loose paint was mixed with the hardener and sprayed. i got great coverage.

I'm likely to just have all the paint for the engine compartment put into rattle cans. We'll see.. I'm good with a rattle can, and I'm not looking to make a show car. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif) Do you have any photos of your engine bay?

My car had a lot of sealer where the arrow points. There is a cavity there that is full of the stuff. Look just outside of where the seatbelt mounts are (which I don't see in the photo). I found rust under the sealer that was not visible. Maybe that area is different for each year.

I'll be sure to take a closer look when I'm out at the car. I remember there being just a thin coat there when I looked, but I could have missed something. This is '71, so there aren't seatbelt mounts in that location.
