So I'm cruising the FerrariChat.com forums cuz one day I will own a 328 and/or Mondial. I bop into the Lamborghini section and check out some Miuras (LOVE THEM! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wub.gif) ). Man, 12-cylinder cars, mid-engine 8's...rolling works of art. Okay, now I'm thinking about last week's SCCA event and how Gary's stock 2.0L beat my Jetta by four seconds! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/screwy.gif) And I remember looking at my Jetta and thinking, "Jeeze, why am I racing a car that's so TALL?!" And my Jetta is no slouch, by the way! But she does need a rear anti-sway and R-compound tires to be competitive.

It's now 1:55am and I'm laying in bed and cannot sleep because my frickin' brain won't shut off (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/mad.gif) So I get some cereal and head into the garage. Under a gray Wolfe car cover rests my 914. I put the cover on her to keep the dust off though she's in such a need of a paint job that I question myself as to why I even bothered. I push my girlfriend's laundry off the rear trunk and pull back the car cover, tossing the rear part onto the targa. Looking at her, uncovered, suddenly makes me SEE her...I mean BAM! there she is, no hiding. The tags on the license plate say she's still legal until Sept. of this year. But she leaks so much oil one would swear the oil filter wasn't on her (actualy it is, it's just that it wasn't all the way on when I received her (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif) ) so driving is out of the question. And the brakes take a lot of force to get them to respond. And I can only get R-1-2 in the tranny. Or 3-4-5. Depends how I adjust the shifter (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/blink.gif)

But there she is, I see her. Her car cover cloaking device is down, exposing her to me...her reality is suddenly hitting me. "Hey", I think, "I have a mid-engined SPORTS CAR! 5-speed, four disc brakes, and removeable roof (my favorite). I have a Porsche!" Then my next thought is, "Dumb-ass!". Just because it isn't uber expensive (yet (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) ) doesn't make it any less of a car, particularly when looking at its racing history.

So I evaluate my garage. Hmmm, just shy of 4' from front bumper to garage door. I measure the width of the engine: About 3.5'. I measure the length of the engine and transaxle: Almost 5'. Okay, since she is on car dollys I can drop the engine/tranny and push her all the way to the front of the garage (to the door), rotate the engine/tranny 90ยบ and put it behind the 914, close to the house door. It would still give my babe walking room to her favorite toys (the washer and dryer). Yes, I know, I'll still need to jack her up to get over the engine/tranny and I'll do it, but the important part is that I will have space in the garage for the body (which really needs engine bay work) and engine oil leak overhaul & cleaning.

If I can at least take care of the oil leaks, get the linkage R&R'd so I can hit ALL the gears, and patch up the engine bay then I can drive her on non-wet days. The weather seal work on the front trunk and roof can wait as can some of the body work. The important part is, she will be driveable and enjoyable. I need that driving boost!

This will be my first engine drop and Type IV engine work. I've dropped and worked on Type IIIs but the rear engined cars are easier to work on (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/clap.gif) Wish me luck...

don't you just love it when ya can't sleep and have to go check "something" on the car in the middle of the night

sometimes my wife wakes up when I get back to bed and she asks what the hell I was doing in the garage at this hour (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/screwy.gif)

I't great to have a mistress like that (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif)

Top of engine taken care of, now the butt is in the air and the bottom work will commence after lunch. Really oily (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/unsure.gif) This is the part I'm not too keen on. I had removed the heat ducting at an earlier date so that's a little less work do be done. Sigh.

Okay, I found out why my shifting was screwy...the grub screw was almost all the way backed out (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif) So, I have both grub screws out and I can't completely remove the rear linkage so I'm trying to remove the front. Like I said, the grub screw is out and looking into the hole I can see 1/2 of the sink hole of the linkage that goes into the cabin but I can't separate them! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/mad.gif)

I had my girlfriend slap the shifter down (like making a 3rd gear shift) while I try to hold the under-engine linkage rod but they won't separate...suggestions on getting the front linkage to separate?

Never mind, I figured out how to do it. I TIGHTLY bungee-corded the shifter to the 3rd gear position then got underneath and tapped the joint with a metal hammer while I pulled on the under-engine shift rod. It slowly separated (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif)

I'm finding more and more loose bolts/nuts under that car. Freakin' PO (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/mad.gif) Now I'm off to unbolt the CV joints...

Right on, keep it up!

That engine drop isn't that much different than a type III. I was surprised how similar when I did my first type III a couple of months ago. The sqaureback does have a little easier engine bay access though. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

Okay, to separate the CVs, you first tap a 1/8" (small) screwdriver with a hammer into the seam. Either side of the gasket, it doesn't matter as you'll need to replace it anyway. Once the gap is wide enough, switch to a 1/4" (medium) screwdriver. With both screwdrivers you will want to tap around the seam as much as you can. You don't have to tap around the entire circumference, just most of it. This will help unwedge the dowel pins.

For the right axle (passenger side) use a small bungee cord to hold it up, using the coil spring from the suspension to place the hooks. The left axle, thanks to the starter being in the way, looks like it will take some maneuvering around during the engine drop.

Interesting, the 914 CVs only have four bolts holding it together whereas the Type 3 use six (but no dowels). And the Type 3 allows much easier access to the outboard CVs.

CRAP!

While lowering my 914 so I could move it forward the passenger door popped open and struck my Type 3 (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/mad.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/icon8.gif) Not only did it take the paint off (and the Woodburn VW show is this weekend) it also broke the door handle!

I'm almost livid with myself (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/mad.gif) Here's the handle:

Ouch that sucks. Been there, done that, it happens.

I thought that was odd about the number of bolts on the CV myself.
