I just recieved my new oil temp sending unit from Mid America Motorworks. I drained the oil and went to install the sending unit but the threads were to big. It appears my oil drain plug is a 12mm and the sending unit is a 14mm.
Anyone else ever come across this?

It doesn't screw into the drain plug hole, it goes in a special replacement cover for the hole on the left side of the pan, the one held in by 2 6mm bolts. The Cap'n

you need this part, called a taco plate. Takes your 14mm probe.

ahh... more probe problems... this one's trying to put his probe in the wrong hole, and it's too big!

maybe you just need a better oil to make it fit... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

they are right though... you gotta put it in the taco

It should already be there. As far as I know, all cars came with the sender, just not the gauge. Crawl under and have a look. It's on the drivers side of the engine case, towards the front of the car. 2 10mm bolts hold it on, I believe.

negative, not all cars came with a taco plate, and his car is a '72... NONE came with them until '73... if they didn't have an oil gauge, they didn't have the sender and thuse didn't have a taco... they just had a flat plate there...

that flat plate can be tapped and drilled to hold the sender though...

OK but somebody must have an old one lying around. Didn't all of them after '73 come with them? There must be an old 1.8 scrapped out there somewhere. Jake maybe?

Sorry for the misinformation! I guess I don't know everything about 914s! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) Wait, 'I guess I don't know anything about 914s' That should be more accurate. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif)

If someone gave me a dollar every time I was wrong and gave bad info, and I, in turn, gave a dollar to someone everytime I actually knew something... my car would be done, and I would have converted to a 3.2 6 and still had plenty of money left... I'm wrong so often there should be a buzzer when I post...

usually IF I get info right, is because I've asked the question before, usually twice... such was the case with this...
